TCL's already enjoyed some success this year with pretty solid budget phones, and now it's turning its attention to tablets, introducing a pair of affordable new slates and sharing word of a low-power screen technology we can hope to see in an upcoming device.

First up we've got the TCL 10 TABMAX, a 10.1-inch tablet running Android 10 and available in both Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity options. The hardware sounds pretty similar to the just-announced Samsung Galaxy Tab A7, and while we've yet to confirm pricing for that one, TCL's tablet is set to be pretty affordable — not Fire-tablet cheap, but starting at just €249, moving up to €299 for LTE. If that's a little too much machine for you, there's always the TCL 10 TABMID. This one's got an 8-inch FHD screen, runs a Snapdragon 665, and packs a 5,000mAh battery. [...] for just €229 when it lands in Q4.

Finally, we're getting a little preview of TCL NXTPAPER. The tech isn't ready for a commercial product just yet, but TCL's working to develop one around it, and wanted to share a little about what we could expect.

Like e-ink, NXTPAPER doesn't generate its own light, and instead reflects ambient light. [...] NXTPAPER promises full HD resolution, color, and a refresh rate high enough to support video.

It’s announcing something called NXTPAPER today — a new type of display that’s meant to offer better eye protection by reducing flicker, blue light and light output. The company said the effect is similar to E Ink, calling it a “combination of screen and paper.” TCL also said it has received eye protection certifications from the German Rhine laboratory, and has 11 different patents for eye protection.

The new screen tech will support Full HD definition and allow for smooth video playback on a paper-like experience. Compared to E Ink, TCL said its version will offer 25 percent higher contrast.
It uses a “highly reflective screen” to “reuse natural light,” doing away with backlighting in the process.

Typically, E Ink devices refresh at very slow rates, making it difficult to enjoy videos or animations on them
If TCL’s NXTPAPER does support smooth video playback at a respectable frame rate, it would be noteworthy. But besides a render provided by the company, we have yet to see any demo of the tech that would show that one way or another.

While there is no word yet on availability, TCL said we can expect the display tech to show up in an actual product “in the near future.” That’s pretty vague as it could mean by the end of this year or next.
