T-Mobile customers report outage, can’t make calls or send text messages

T-Mobile customers across the U.S. say they can’t make calls or send text messages following an apparent outage — although mobile data appears to be unaffected.

We tested with a T-Mobile phone in the office. Both calls to and from the T-Mobile phone failed. When we tried to send a text message, it said the message could not be sent. The outage began around 3pm PT (6pm ET).
Users took to social media to complain about the outage. It’s not clear how many customers are affected, but users across the U.S. have said they are affected.

A spokesperson for T-Mobile did not immediately comment, but a T-Mobile support account said the cell giant has “engaged our engineers and are working on a resolution.”

US mobile carrier T-Mobile suffered an outage Friday night, with customers on the East Coast unable to make voice calls. Calls immediately disconnected after dialing a number, users said.
T-Mobile didn't immediately respond to a request for comment, but as of 3:20 p.m. PT, there were around 14,500 reports of the service being out, according to Down Detector. Most of those reports were coming from Philadelphia; New York City; Washington, DC; Newark, New Jersey; Chicago; Houston; Providence, Rhode Island; and Baltimore.

By 2:17 p.m. PT, Metro PCS -- owned by T-Mobile -- was also flagged as having issues by Down Detector. It was joined by US Cellular at 2:58 p.m., and AT&T at 3:28 p.m., with almost 700 reports. Down Detector also noticed issues across Verizon and Sprint.

If your T-Mobile service was having issues on Monday you were not alone. The third-largest wireless carrier is seemingly having widespread issues around the country impacting the ability to make calls and text.

It is unclear what caused the issue or when it will be resolved. Users across the country took to Twitter to note the outage, with T-Mobile rising to the top spot on the site's U.S. Trending Topics as of 3:45 p.m. ET.
The main issue appears to be with calls and texts, with users saying that data was working normally.

The nationwide T-Mobile outage is over, calls should be working again
Verizon and AT&T calls to T-Mobile should work too

It’s still unclear what the issue might have been, though T-Mobile said early Tuesday AM that it was an “IP traffic related issue that has created significant capacity issues in the network core throughout the day.” Earlier this evening, FCC chairman Ajit Pai tweeted that the outage was “unacceptable” and that the FCC will launch an investigation.

During the T-Mobile outage and a brief Facebook Messenger outage, a rumor spread on social media that the United States was suffering a massive targeted distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, but so far those rumors seem unfounded. Security researcher Brian Krebs, who knows a thing or two about DDoS attacks, tweeted that there’s no indication that the outage was related.

The transaction will close by July 1, Dish said in a regulatory filing, without providing terms. The companies had been working out details, such as whether Boost customers would get phones that work on T-Mobile’s network.

The Federal Communications Commission is kicking off its investigation of last week's T-Mobile outage by seeking public comment. Government agencies, public safety entities, businesses, and individuals are encouraged to submit comments about their experiences during the 13-hour outage.

"We seek comment on the impact of these outages from the perspective of affected public safety entities, as well as state and local governments," the FCC said in a public notice today.
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai called the outage "unacceptable" and said the FCC will be "demanding answers," as we reported last week.

T-Mobile is once again on the hook for a 911 outage. The carrier has agreed to pay $19.5 million to settle an FCC investigation of a 12-hour service outage in June 2020 that led to 911 call failures. While the FCC didn't know exactly how many emergency calls were affected due to some overlapping issues, it recorded tens of thousands of issues.

Over 23,000 calls suffered a "complete" failure, the FCC said, while a similar amount didn't include location data. Roughly another 20,000 didn't include callback info. The outage began when a leased fiber link in the T-Mobile network went awry, and a single-location routing flaw magnified the crisis. T-Mobile also had problems remotely accessing the fiber link.

This isn't the first time T-Mobile has dealt with a 911 outage. It settled to the tune of $17.5 million over failures in 2014.
