Now that Sygate is dead and buried, how long before it ceases to be sensible to use it assuming that there will be no more signature updates?

My guess is, you'll be safe with it for at least a couple of years. I have a license for it and for a couple of others (I like switching every so often), and don't plan to dump Sygate for at least 2 yrs or so. It's a good firewall and will stay good for quite a while.

    I second to Chuck.
You will need to change a firewall when a new Windows operating system arrives in your computer. As for IDS, I have always used a free version of the SPF firewall, so no IDS. There are free IDS software though, but I dont use any :p

Yep, I agree too. It should be good as long as it works with your OS and network adaptor etc. It's a pretty good solid firewall. Look how long people have been and still are using Kerio 2.1.5 without updates or support.
