I can't get the f'wall to start up, shrink to tray like other apps; I can see that it - smc.exe - runs as a process, so I guess it's "on" in one sense, but why can't I get it to start up, shrink to tray as do the other programs?

I even have Code Stuff Starter and Control Panel, wherein one can shuffle an app around to have it start from one place or another, but it doesn't seem to matter much, thus far re f'wall's behavior.

And, the co. seems to not update f'wall signature very often, I gather?

    Thanks for info/help,

Well, you can expect no updates on Sygate for a while, that's for sure. They were just acquired.

Could it be that software you're running that shuffles apps around causing the problem? You might try removing that and see if it changes. It sounds like the firewall service is running ok, but the GUI is not loading properly and hence not appearing in the tray..

    1. (From the tray, bottom left) Select "Start" > "All Programs" > Sygate Personal Firewall; the Quick-Launch Icon is there. (Once in a while, the program "seizes up"; you can end Smc.exe in task mgr, then restart the Firewall.)

    2. From Sygate menu, select "Tools" > "Options" > "General"; See if "Hide Sygate Personal Firewall System Tray Icon" is checked or unchecked.
(Note: The Firewall uses some resources; you can choose to make it "On-Demand" by unchecking "Automatically load Sygate Personal Firewall service at startup".)

3.You have the last updated version of Sygate. (The free firewall was updated to Version 5.6 Build 2808.)Sygate has been purchased by Symantec, as Kerodo says. (You can read about it HERE ).
    Good luck; hope this helps.
