Microsoft launched the current generation Surface Dock back in 2015. The device brought a simpler design in the form of a box with ports, replacing the one that needed the Surface device to be slid into it. However, it’s been more than four and a half years since it has been upgraded. Now, new listings hinting at a Surface Dock 2 have surfaced on a Belgian eCommerce portal that lists the device at €244 (approx. $267).

While not much in terms of specifications is provided in the listing, Dr. Windows reports (via WinFuture.de) that the accessory will see some much-needed improvements while retaining the form factor and design.
The two mini DisplayPorts on the back are said to be replaced by two Type-C ports (rendered above).

As for power delivery, the updated accessory is said to deliver around 200W, up from the 95W on the current device. This also is a welcome addition for users since devices such as the Surface Book 2 are known to draw more power when pushed hard.

Along with the slew of other Surface-related announcements Microsoft made today — including the Surface Book 3, Surface Go 2, and more — the company is also introducing a new Surface Dock 2 docking station and a standalone USB-C travel hub.

The Surface Dock 2 is not much of a design departure from Microsoft’s original model, which launched a handful of years ago; it’s basically a minimalist black slab. That said, it’s absolutely packed with USB-C ports — four of them, to be precise. Two replace the previous pair of Mini DisplayPort ports for transmitting video to a monitor, while the set on the opposite side of the Dock 2 can be used to connect or charge any other USB-C devices you have.
In addition to its fleet of USB-C ports, the Dock 2 also has an Ethernet jack, a headphone port, two USB Type-A ports, and a Kensington lock. The circular port near the Ethernet jack is for the Dock 2’s own power supply.

The Surface Dock 2 only works with Surface computers, as its cable connects via the Surface Connect port.

Earlier this month alongside various other Surface devices, Microsoft announced the Surface Dock 2 and the USB-C Travel Hub. They're both available for purchase today, and they're the last to become available from this latest batch of Surface announcements.

Aside from the Surface Connect adapter, the Surface Dock 2 has a number of improvements over its predecessor. It now has four USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C ports for 10Gbps data transfer speeds, and there are an additional two USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A ports. On top of that, there's an Ethernet port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a power port.
The USB-C Travel Hub has a more diverse range of ports. There's one USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port, one USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A port, Ethernet, HDMI 2.0, and VGA.

But besides performance, the latest Surface Dock 2 is also quite different in terms of sizes and a couple of other things.
It draws more power as it’s a power rating of 199W vs 99W for the 1st Gen Surface Dock. The newer model also got a Microsoft logo, something that’s missing on its predecessor. The SurfLink cable used in the new one is slightly longer — ~81cm long vs 69cm in the older model. The new Surface Dock is also lighter than the 1st Gen — the new Surface Dock weighs 558gm, while the older one weighs 597gm.

There are some notable similarities between the two. The packaging, power connector, SurfLink 40-pin connector, height of the Surface Dock 2 is exactly the same as its predecessor.
