    Hi,
I'm just wondering if there's any chance that sas pro scans faster than sas free. I'm probably asking a silly question. There's no reason to ask. I'm just curious.

I doubt it, but on my slightly underpowered notebook SAS 5's quick scan is now around 15 mins, which is a huge improvement on the 50+ mins it used to take. A full scan, however can be over 2 hours. The new Critical Points scanner only takes a couple of minutes though. Which is a good fast scan just before closing a session.

Some observations that I made installing and briefly using V5:

Previously, one was able to select which drives to include when running a scan. This doesn't seem to be available
anymore and there is no indication of what drives are scanned. I have a lot of partitions I don't want to include.
Does this mean that I can only achieve this via a custom scan?

SAS allows you to resize and place the GUI to meet one's preferences, but it does not honor those customizations.
It only knows one position and one size. Also, part of the SAS GUI is hidden behind the windows XP toolbar when
running 120DPI. That is the main reason I would like SAS to remember its window settings.

The database status will show incorrect information if you select 'Check for Updates' and there is no internet
connection. It will always show updated even though the update may have failed. Also, to see the update
information previously available in V4, you now need an internet connection via 'More Information'. I miss seeing
the date/time of the actual database present on the local system.

I will say what I said in a different thread:

You need to keep in mind that no single on-demand scanner will detect and remove 100% of all malware. I think some of you are underestimating the removal capabilities of SuperAntiSpyware. The video clearly shows that it's able to remove serious infections, such as ransomware. You also need to keep in mind that SuperAntiSpyware was tested against the latest malware threats in this video. This makes it difficult for any on-demand scanner to keep up (due to the speed of new malware variations). This is exactly the reason why I recommend 3 on-demand scanners in my removal guide.

I, for one, will continue to recommend and use SuperAntiSpyware as an on-demand scanner.

So true but its not an excuse either for detecting less than 50%...

No one was playing down SAS's clean up abilities.
What was being challenged was the strength or degree of protection its realtime was giving its users.

Since you mention the ransomware trojan in the video then that is a perfect example to highlight those concerns.

In the video it installed streight past SAS realtime and took control of the reviewers test enviroment.(Realtime protection had failed). The base now belongs to the badguys until its removed.

The fact the scanner was able to detect and remove is kudos to SAS but already the machine was compromised, the horse had long bolted.

Agreed a lot of vendors struggle to keep up with new 0 hour malware but if you look at the MRG flash test results of 0 hour code there is distinct patterns forming in the results.(poor/so-so/good).

Its peers HMP, Emsisoft and MBAM are stomping it into the ground currently in handling 0 hour code stakes.

Just to summarize cleaning and fixing is one aspect that SAS excels at but realtime protection ability is only as good as its test results against current 0 hour malware.

It is a good sign that SAS developer is looking at hiring more workers to put the teeth back into SAS.Hopefully it will get better in time at % of potential 0 hour infections it can stop from compromising a system it is protecting:thumb:

SAS 5 help file is for version 4.xx. This is 100% unprofessional, IMHO.

    WTH o_O

    Fix that, please. ;)

    I'd like to see this.

I haven't seen nearly enough tests. MRG was like... 6 0-days or something? And the test that I linked didn't have too many samples either.

I'd like to see a test that really shows SAS.

We made the decision to get the product out and will be updating the help shortly. Most products don't even have help these days.

We will actually be updating SAB now that we have 5.0 out and have more resources.

    Yes, unfortunately, it is true.

How can people move around settings and all that, that may be new or in new places, without a help file guiding them? o_O I suppose we all know the features, settings, etc... Why bother with a help file/updated help file... There's no point... A help file, by definition, is not helpful...

Hopefully, you won't make of SAS one more in the bunch. ;) :thumb:

I find it faster to ask on a forum and get a reply within minutes than waste my time reading a basic helpfile

Most of the time you don't find what you are looking for in the Help files as it is targeting the n00bs only.

    SAS needs to improve detection.

Test after test reveal limitations in SAS. SAS reps come back and talk about ‘real world’ threats. But all the tests to one degree or another reflect the real world. That is the basis of testing. No test is designed for a strictly hypothetical or laboratory environment.

I’m a former SAS Pro user… and I’m looking forward to product improvement and the privilege to use the product again in the future.

There was a time where MBAM was an SAS copycat and behind in all aspects of development.

But those days are gone. MBAM surpassed SAS some time ago, and it’s reflected in recent testing.

What SAS needs is not excuses about “real world malware…”..

What they need is real world product development and improvement.

Don’t get me wrong -- I’m a supporter of Nick and SAS, I just believe that product development has somewhat lapsed and needs attention to make the product again 1st class.

    :)

So do the SAB owners still get the free SAS Pro license?

Has anyone noticed any RAM spiking after a Critical Point Scan?

I have it running W7 64 bit. Not a problem in yet. Looks like a clean release.

MAYBE the vendor method od releasing preparatory updates before 5 was a good idea and model for others.:)

FWIW, SAS is the only product that actually ever found a parasite on my setups

Question- does this version scan FAT32 drives? I remember there were some previous SAS versions which did not.
