Hi, thought that I would post this as I am interested in a utility re apps and whether they are uptodate, however I have always been advised that if "it ain't broke" don't fix it, especially since I have a toshiba notebook I have never used anything to check on driver updates as an example as toshiba advised that their site is the one to use as the notebook uses their specific drivers with their specs.
I know that as once I used a utility that indicated that I needed to update drivers and after I did I had real mega problems.
So I had to uninstall and reinstall drivers and then had to get a tech to look at the notebook which I use for personal/work.

What does this utility detecto_O? Just apps updates o_O

So then it leaves the hardware alone...like drivers etc.
I just don't want to get myself in a muddle like I did once in reading what this utility suggested I do and having a notebook for the first time, I foolishly followed the recommendations and messed up my computer via the drivers.

There's absolutely no risk as SUMo only checks "software" and do not install anything by itself : the user has full authority on his PC's configuration

Just made a short comparison between Sumo, Updatestar and Secunia Personal Software Inspector.

    My first impressions:
    • Sumo and Updatestar are much faster in scanning my applications, Updatestar seemed to be a bit faster than Sumo.
    • Secunia doesn't work with Firefox, it insists to start IE. That's a clear negative IMHO.
    • Recognized applications:
      Sumo 147
      Updatestar 156
      Secunia 146
    • I have to review these lists a little closer yet. However, I was surprised that Sumo didn't recognize Itunes and HijackThis at all (note, that I don't have them installed in c:\Program Files but on another partition - but other applications there were recognized. Strange ...). Secunia found both Itunes and HijackThis but maintains that they are up-to-date which is wrong. Only Updatestar informed me that updates for Itunes and HijackThis are available. On the other hand, Updatestar maintains that Skype 3.6.216 is the newest version which is wrong.
    • A nice feature in Updatestar is that it shows some infos for most applications and that every user can report updates (which I did for Skype).
    • Updatestar is also the only one that seems to work flawlessly in a limited account. Secunia must be started as admin, Sumo can be started as limited user but is not able to save its findings.
Again, these are only my first impressions. Bottom line: So far, Updatestar is my favourite, closely followed by Sumo. Secunia is slow and only works with IE - I will uninstall it.

There's also AppGet to add to the mix, but this thread is about SuMo. ;)

Just having a play, looks good.

    Love the ignore beta feature.
    Love the ignore MS feature.
Love the version list on the website.
    Gui is neat and slick.

Needs scheduling, eg check for updates once a day/week (maybe command line and autoexit of no updats found so can use windows taskmanager).
Needs ability to report new version available, or version error.

    Misses 5 programs.

Currently my favourite update tool :D (appget clunky and lists alpha/beta, updatestar gui slow and messy and too many incorrectly listed programs/versions).
