One of my members wrote this the other night. It lists the startup entries on your computer and then launches the log in Notepad like rmbox's startup log, but this one works on NT/2K/XP and it also does running processes. Pretty good little program and helpful in solving problems cause by something going at startup. It even looks for the presence of explorer.exe in places it shouldn't be in.

Merijn Bellekom's StartList 1.20(version number may be higher by now) http://www.geocities.com/merijn_bellekom/new/files.html

Geocities being crap, I'll mirror this soon on my site.

*Gloats because he beat Tony to the punch ;-)

    [edit]
Seems we've killed his bandwidth ;)

Mark is mirroring it at Lurkhere.

    LOL! :D :D

In addition to also running on XP/NT, and listing running processes , it has these further advantages to for example Rmbox's well known StartupLog:

It correctly identifies the path to the Startup folder in non-English language versions of Windows. (StartupLog can't in many cases, and declares the folder empty)

    - It lists the path and filename for the Startup Folder shortcuts, which is a great new feature.

    - Nonexistent or empty startup locations aren't listed when running the application without added parameters, thus saving space.

If you want to see everything, run it with the /complete tag.

And its developer produced 3 new builds in 8 hours time, reacting to suggestions for new options and minor bug fixes, to produce an end result that really rocks! :)

Here's my StartupList, to give you an idea of what it looks like:

Did not look at the program yet, but i do see you have Office in the startup. Do you need all that all time? slowing down the startup process, taking lot of RAM all that time......
I made a folder on my desktop with the Office icons in them, not even the Office bar! You might like to try that out, depending on your situation of course!

I know, but I just love my Office Shortcut Bar.

    It's my only weakness... :D

There's a bunch of people at DSL Reports having trouble to get it to run on Win 2000.

    They're getting

    Run-time error '5':
    invalid procedure call or argument

They're also wondering if/thinking that it won't run on Win ME.

    Here's the thread:

    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,4367125~root=security,1~mode=flat;start=20#4371620

I've already PM'd Merijn to come to their rescue.

Anyone here running Win2K able to confirm this one way or the other?

Works for my computer at work Win2k SP2.
I didn't make time to install SP 3 yet, maybe that's the difference?

    Regards,

    Pieter

Thanks for the heads up, Pieter!

If you feel like it, jump into the thread at DSL reports.
    Don't feel obliged, though. ;)

I hope Merijn will get there later on

One question about the results this app displays:
What can I learn from these entries?

    Checking for superhidden extensions:

    .lnk: HIDDEN!
    .pif: HIDDEN!
    .exe: not hidden
    .com: not hidden
    .bat: not hidden
    .hta: not hidden
    .scr: not hidden
    .shs: HIDDEN!
    .vbs: not hidden
    .vbe: not hidden
    .wsh: not hidden

On my computer and the list Tony posted .shs is not hidden. On this computer it is. Does that sound any alarms?

    Regards,

    Pieter

From the 'Verbose' version of the List:

"Some file extensions are always hidden, like .lnk (shortcut) and .pif (shortcut to MS-DOS program).
The Life_Stages virus was a .shs (Shell Scrap) file that had the extension hidden by default.
This can be a security risk when a virus with a double-extension filename is on the loose, since the extension can be hidden even when 'Don't show extensions for known filetypes' is turned off."

If you want to "unhide" .shs, launch REgedit, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShellScrap, and delete the NeverShowExt value in the right hand window.

    Cheers,

    Hi Tony,

Thnx for that. Maybe you could check this thread out: http://www.helpmij.nl/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79276
and help me out. Don't feel obliged :D but he's got lots more in there I don't understand. I'm just beginning to figure out how to read the results of this program.

Took a look, and as you noted yourself, there's some spyware left: Gator and MediaLoads Installer .

You can see from his Wininit.bak that he probably recently upgraded Internet Explorer.

Nothing else there that merits further attention as far as I can see.

Not more than about any other virus, providing you keep your antivirus definitions updated.

You can also install Jason Levine's Script Sentry, which guards *.shs as well.

    And/or rename Shscrap.dll to Shscrap.bak
