I'm in a similar situation to bo. My Start menu opens fine with everything there as it was before the upgrade and pinning/unpinning works as it should.

If it helps, I too upgraded using the Update Assistant after downloading the said file via Chrome without using any user-agent switcher. My language is UK English and is set as such. No resident anti-malware/exploit other than Windows Defender was running at the time of upgrade and installation.

It seems it is happening with a clean install also.
I too see this Task Host Plug and Play process running when I shut down. Btw I think my Search menu continues to work. Edit: Correction - nope.
If I don't do a hard reset (which solves the problem), I can right-click Start and that menu will open. If I then click Settings, nothing opens either.

May try Classic Shell, but that won't solve e.g. WD Security Center.

    Consider yourself lucky.

I also run Win 10 1703 with metered Ethernet connection. When I was informed of the Flash Player update a couple of days ago, it also started downloading 1709 Feature Update. Forgot to turn off metered connection and Feature update failed. When metered connection was enabled, Flash Player update succeeded but Feature 1709 update not offered again. Nor is it offered via manual Windows Update check. Suspect Microsoft is only offering it when another update is pending?

Depends on what you call lucky. ;)

I shut the machine down and it may stay shut down until M$ recognises there is an issue.

In case of start menu broken, try to create a new user account, set it to admin, delete the old one; this is an issue known since the last creator update.

    FYI
    https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent-windows-10-from-automatically-downloading-updates/

    "Hide" utility here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...-window?utm_source=twitter?utm_source=twitter

I assume this still works for ver. 1703?

Just my luck :D. Maybe I should disable it again.

Edit: Well on my system at least it seems the bug solved my problem :). It would appear there is some interaction there, maybe at a driver level. But will most likely keep it disabled for now, given that there is a bug they are working on. But @Krustymaybe your original hunch was correct, it may be worth trying, when they issue a new beta.

But you just said earlier that it doesn't work with a clean install so how is it related to HMP?

I would suggest maybe the user profile became corrupt but as others have said, if a clean install resulted in the same issues... it doesn't seem likely. Are there other user profiles on your PC? Do they have the same problem?

No other profiles. Only my Admin account.

I edited that post #36 you quoted. It seems OK now, HMPA disabled or enabled, after I installed build 719 beta. It may be a driver level issue ...

It was @Krusty that tried a clean install. Indeed, maybe he has a different issue.

I wouldn't doubt a video driver issue. I can't even install this build on my laptop. Instant BSOD. I find myself wishing there was an actual alternative to Windows. And no, Linux and Mac OS are not it.

Maybe i had luck :cautious: After upgrading to the Fall Creators Update the startmenu of all users is still intact.

    itman,

I thought metered connections only applied to Wireless. Not to Ethernet.

The Creators update (1703) made that option available in all W10 versions. Go to Ethernet in Settings, Click it and you ll see the option at the bottom of the Window.

I doubt it, Brian. You are probably about 50 years ahead of me in things related to computers.

KB 3073930 seems to have worked on this machine. Not 100% sure yet as Windows Update says there are updates available but nothing, including Security Update for Adobe Flash Player, are downloading.

Edit: After another restart and trying Windows Update again this time Adobe Flash Player and Windows Defender def's downloaded and installed successfully.

Windows is up to date without 1709 and this Start menu bug.

The 'howtogeek' link also shows how it can be done for Ethernet prior to ver. 1703 by doing a registry hack. That is how I did it prior to ver. 1703.

Will also add that Eset has a nice feature that will alert you of pending Win Updates. This occurs long before any Windows Update notification is received; they must key off of the Win Catalog. This way you can run wushowhide.diagcab w/o having to manually check if any Win Updates are available.

Does this make sense in Settings?

In Offline Maps you have to turn Metered Connections ON to get more data.

In Ethernet you have to turn Metered Connections OFF to get more data.
