I think that with normal day to day use it will last ~5 years.

It's a bad idea to disable swapfile completely, but you can reduce the size with more RAM yes (less swap writings = increase in longevity).

    @ Martijn2

Hi, why do you say ?

    But then acknowledge that ?

I've had swap/page files disabled since 98 days with no problems ;)

I read somewhere a while ago that some applications need to use the swapfile, for example photoshop (I can't find the source anymore). If it causes no problem while disabled, I guess you can keep it that way ;)

Can I ask for how long you have been using them? I just wonder why OCZ have so many problems and the 2 that I posted seem very good!

    TIA,

Well I'm taking the chance I just order 2 Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL240GB-DX 2.5" 240GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) drives 1 for the OS and Programs and the other for Data http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226153 to install on my new Dell XPS 17'' HD Laptop with the Intel i7-840QM processor 1.86Ghz with Max Turbo Boost 3.2Ghz with 4 Cores and 8 Threads with 16GB of 1333Mhz DDR3 memory! At the moment I have 2 Seagate 500GB 7200RPM Drives I know I will see a big difference in speed!! ;)

Very nice, makes me jealous ;) Not considering a RAID 0 for some extra performance boost? I'm still waiting for the new Intel drives to be fully available in the Netherlands.

The laptop doesn't have the capability :( but it will still be smoking fast with the SSD's! My boot time now is 1 min 8 seconds I will let you know when I get the drives and install them! And I hope they last without problems but I always back up my important files to external drive!

Why use SSD the for Data? Does it need the speed? Isn't the hard drive more appropriate, because of its larger size?

Solid State is very clever, but i wouldn't trust it for permanent storage. Great for USB sticks/drives though.

I know lots of people have backup = :thumb: And with SS i believe you need it even more than with other options. Without BU repair/recovery/copy etc from a failing/faulty etc conventional HD is often successful, but i wouldn't count on that with SS :(

That is only true if you are using swap extensively. If you have large ram, you will ever touch swap in modern Linux distros. And you can tune the swappiness ratio to tweak it down further. As to whether ssd are credible, I would not yet use them for data, only small-sized system that can be easily imaged.

Well I'm running the 2 Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL240GB-DX 2.5" 240GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) drives and so far so GREAT and the Windows Experience Index went from 5.9 to 7.8 for the Primary Hard Disk! I also have Diskeeper Pro Premier 2011 with Hyperfast to help keep it at the faster performance and extended lifespan http://www.diskeeper.com/hyperfast/ I will update if I have any problems or not! ;)

Sorry, had not been keeping up with this thread. I have had them for about 6 months now with no issues and no loss of speed, if you are still interested.

Can't go wrong with them. I have Mushkin RAM in every machine I own and haven't had a BSOD since I installed it. Picking them for drives was an easy choice. :thumb:

Are you still using a Pagefile? I was wondering since I have 16GB of Ram!

I am as I have plenty of free space and don't believe in disabling it in general. I have 8GB of RAM in my laptop and find that a 1GB pagefile is sufficient for opening up some wasted space on an SSD instead of using the default 8GB.

    @ Triple Helix

Hyperfast seems like a no BS application of a good idea :) Hadn't heard of it before, so thanks :thumb: i'll spread the word.

As an aside, does using Diskeeper in Any way/s affect your Acronis True Image/s ? Didn't think many people still used it anymore ;)
