Across the country, most Sprint retail stores will become T-Mobile stores on August 2, T-Mobile announced today as part of its Uncarrier event.

The announcement doesn’t go into great detail, but it sounds just as you’d expect. Where Sprint stores currently are, T-Mobile stores will replace them with new signage and paint jobs on August 2.

Four months after it closed its merger deal with Sprint, T-Mobile has finally unified the majority of Sprint stores across the U.S. under the flagship T-Mobile brand. The Sprint stores, which have been updated with a "fresh coat of magenta paint," will now serve both Sprint and T-Mobile customers.

Only a handful of retail stores in rural areas and national retail stores like Best Buy will continue to serve Sprint customers alone.

With the unification of the two brands now complete, the new T-Mobile claims it will be able to better compete on price with AT&T and Verizon, and deliver a nationwide 5G network that will be "second to none."

Dish buys Ting Mobile to expand its wireless business

Dish is adding another piece to its small but growing wireless business. On Monday, the company announced a deal to acquire the customer base of mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Ting Mobile from Tucows. As part of the agreement, the latter will also provide infrastructure services to Dish, helping facilitate things like billing and activations.

The deal follows Dish's recent acquisition of Boost Mobile. At the start of July, the telecom paid $1.4 billion to buy the company from T-Mobile and Sprint.

Before the T-Mobile merger, Dish spent years trying to enter the wireless market. Now it's quickly setting itself up to compete in the space. It’s too early to tell whether Dish will become a legitimate fourth player, but getting help from a company that has managed multiple MVNOs in the past should help.

T-Mobile announced today that it has surpassed AT&T as the second largest wireless provider in the U.S. The claim was made as part of the company's financial report for the second quarter of 2020.

The company attributed that feat in large part to its merger with Sprint, which closed on April 1 after two years of slog to get regulatory approvals. In addition, T-Mobile cited a strong customer growth as one of the factors driving its latest milestone. It added 1.245 million subscribers in Q2 2020, bringing its total customers to 98.3 million.

T-Mobile US CEO Mike Sievert yesterday fired back at AT&T and Verizon, saying the carriers' complaints about T-Mobile obtaining more spectrum licenses show that they are afraid of competition.

"The duopolists are scrambling to block this new competition any way they can... Suddenly in the unfamiliar position of not having a dominant stranglehold on the wireless market, and preferring not to meet the competitive challenge in the marketplace, AT&T and Verizon are urging the FCC to slow T-Mobile down and choke off our ability to compete fairly for added radio spectrum," Sievert wrote in a blog post.
Sievert pointed out that Verizon has more spectrum than T-Mobile when including high-band spectrum that isn't counted in the FCC's screen:

T-Mobile added a net total of more than 2 million customers in the third quarter, giving it more than 100 million customers for the first time.

The Bellevue, Wash.-based wireless company posted of revenue of $19.3 billion and profit of $1.3 billion, or $1 per share, topping Wall Street’s expectations by both measures. Analysts surveyed in advance of T-Mobile’s earnings release expected the company to post earnings of 43 cents/share on revenue of $18.34 billion.
The results represent “the strongest financials in our history,” said Mike Sievert, the T-Mobile CEO, on an earnings call with analysts and investors.

The CDMA network was already slated to shut down on January 1 of that year.

Now that T-Mobile’s merger with Sprint is more than a year old, it’s ready to nudge you toward its own network. T-Mobile has confirmed to Light Reading that it’s shutting down Sprint LTE service on June 30, 2022.

The LTE shutdown will come half a year after an already-announced plan to deactivate the Sprint CDMA network on January 1, 2022. T-Mobile had already started alerting customers in late 2020 and promised to notify everyone who needs to act. The carrier argued that would not only help people leap to “real broadband speeds,” but free spectrum that lets T-Mobile further improve LTE and 5G performance.
