Property tax owners who used an online portal on the county website to access their tax bills may have had their personal information viewed as a result of a data breach.

Monroe County Treasurer Jessica McClellan said the county was alerted on Nov. 1 that Master’s Touch, LLC, which provides the online Web portal, eNoticesOnline.com, the county uses so taxpayers can view their tax statement and assessments, fell victim to a malware attack on Oct. 23.
She said the intruders did not view any banking or credit card information.

She said Master’s Touch LLC forced users of its system to change its password and also sent out letters in the mail to customers last week explaining the situation. McClellan said there are 1,930 subscribers to the online Web portal in Monroe County.

Malware attack aimed at Walla Walla County property-tax site

Walla Walla County taxpayers received a notice in the mail Monday of a malware attack earlier this fall involving the company that manages local electronic property-tax statements and assessments.

On Oct. 23, the server that manages the eNoticesOnline system was accessed by an intruder, according to the letter.
Records on the site are public, but the intruder may have accessed taxpayers’ usernames and passwords.

The Master’s Touch LLC is a third-party provider to the county of electronic property-tax statements. People use eNoticesOnline.com to sign up and download their electronic statements, County Treasurer Gordon Heimbigner said.

The Vermont Department of Taxes today disclosed that taxpayers' private information was exposed because of a security issue affecting its online filing site discovered on July 2, 2020.

The data breach affected all Vermonters who electronically filed Property Transfer Tax returns using the tax department's site between February 2017 and July 2020.

"Verification credentials for electronically filed property transfer tax returns available in public municipal records could be used to access previously submitted tax return information," the breach notification says.
According to Vermont's Department of Taxes, once it was alerted of the security vulnerability affecting taxpayers' data on July 2, 2020, it immediately disabled functionality that may have allowed unauthorized third parties to get access to others' tax data.

However, although the risk of any taxpayers' data being accessed during the last three years because of this issue should be low according to Vermont's Department of Taxes notification, those who have electronically filed property tax returns between February 2017 and July 2020, are advised to take a number of steps to defend against potential identity theft attempts.
