It's called Sodar, and it doesn't even need an app to run. Just go to sodar.withgoogle.com or goo.gle/sodar in your Chrome browser on an Android device, tap through the various permissions dialogs for things like camera access, etc., and the site will fire up a very intuitive augmented reality experience.

The projected line in the augmented reality camera feed moves as you do, so you can check to see if those taped-down lines in front of the supermarket till are up to snuff. Keep in mind that although the line is generally accurate (in my testing on a Pixel 4 XL, anyway), it may not be perfectly precise, so treat it as more of an estimation.

Your phone may need to be ARCore-compatible, but it appears there are also additional unknown device requirements — your mileage may vary.

Zebra Technologies, which sells barcode scanners and other computers used in warehouses globally, introduced a feature on Thursday that sounds an alert when workers breach physical distancing guidelines over the novel coronavirus.

Warehouses and factories have been trying to avert outbreaks with greater separation of workers than ever before, putting plastic shields around workstations and testing smartwatches and other gadgets that buzz to signal people are too close.
However, this is the first time such functionality has been incorporated into the specialized devices that warehouse workers use on a daily basis.

The company started testing the new technology last month with 100 of the 200 workers at its Netherlands distribution center. The system issued about 80 distance alerts per day initially. But alerts fell to about 10 per day as workers adapted and engineers fine-tuned software, Zebra said.
Zebra devices typically attach to workers' waist belts but also can sit on armbands or lanyards, Bianculli said.

Alerts sound when devices come within 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 meters) of each other, and the tone repeats for longer intervals as people get closer or fail to back up. Some of the devices also vibrate as part of the alert.

From the outside, at least, Amazon’s COVID-19 response has been a mixed bag. The company has noted in various reports the things it’s been doing in an attempt to curb the virus’s spread — particularly among warehouse employees deemed essential workers.

These days, the company is hoping to shed a bit more light on what it’s doing within the warehouse setting to deal with the novel coronavirus. This morning, it showcased a new “Distance Assistant” designed to help workers maintain a WHO-prescribed social distance of six feet.
Amazon’s VP and robotics head Brad Porter detailed the augmented reality system that’s already in place in a smattering of the company’s fulfillment centers.

“The standalone unit uses machine learning models to differentiate people from their surroundings. Combined with depth sensors, [...] Individuals remaining six feet apart are highlighted with green circles, while those who are closer together are highlighted with red circles.”

The system is displayed on a 50-inch monitor. It’s not exactly immediate feedback that technology might be able to provide with, say, a haptic wearable. Instead, it’s designed to serve as a visual reminder for workers to keep their circles green by maintaining the appropriate social distancing.

VentureBeat: Amazon unveils Distance Assistant, an open source platform to enforce physical distancing among workers

Distance Assistant requires only a standard power outlet, according to Amazon, and can be quickly deployed to building entrances and other high-visibility areas. A spokesperson told VentureBeat the goal isn’t to help managers spot violations, but rather to identify further social distancing improvements as Amazon continues deploying technologies to enhance health and safety in its facilities.

“We’ve heard that employees find value in getting immediate visual feedback, and site leaders are welcoming another safety measure,” Porter added.
“We are also beginning the process to open source the software and AI behind this innovation so that anyone can create their own Distance Assistant,” he said. “Nothing is more important than the health and well-being of our employees, and we’ll continue to innovate to keep them as safe as possible.”

Students and professors at the University of Florida have developed three new wearable devices to help monitor, detect and mitigate COVID-19, including a wristband that vibrates if someone gets too close.

Another wristband, called RiskBand, uses Bluetooth signal strength to alert the wearer if they are coming too close to another individual.
A light vibration reminds the wearer to maintain social distancing. The wristband also generates a log of who the user has come into contact with and at what time of day, which can assist in contact tracing to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, Bhunia said.

The Bump device, which makes an audible alert when the wearer is too close to others, will be worn by the 100 elite competitors and 500 event coordinators.
The device will not be worn during the race, however, with athletes taking them off just before the starting line.

The Bump uses radio-frequency technology, allowing organisers to track when athletes and staff are within a defined distance of one another.
And if one tests positive for coronavirus in the subsequent two weeks, those who have been in close proximity will be notified.

Travelers concerned about crowded airport checkpoints during the pandemic might have one less thing to worry about if they’re flying through Denver International Airport.

Denver International Airport launched a free airport-security reservations app called VeriFly that allows passengers to “make a reservation to access a dedicated TSA screening lane and a reserved limited-capacity train car to the concourse.”
VeriFly is available only on iOS devices for now. Denver passengers can reserve a 15-minute window to pass through designated TSA airport security lanes up to two weeks in advance.

“To ensure that the security lanes and dedicated train car are not overwhelmed, we are limiting reservations each hour,” Denver International’s VeriFly guidance stated. “Additionally, we plan accordingly around peak times so we can space passengers out and avoid overcrowding.”

The AWS Panorama appliance plugs into internet protocol (IP) cameras - a standard type of digital video camera used by a huge range of companies on their sites.
For example, in a retail shop, it could count the number of customers, track their movements and check the length of queues, Amazon has suggested.
