Meta drops fact checkers Zuckerberg last week stated that Meta fact checkers will only be removed from their US platform. All other countries outside the US will continue to have fact checkers. However, Meta may reverse that decision at the behest of the incoming US administration. https://www.euronews.com/next/2025/...f-it-drops-fact-checkers-in-eu-too-commission
Same over here, it's still Twitter for me. But I always hated Twitter to be honest, it's such a badly designed website. Latest news is that he's planning to launch a new payment system called X Money, it's supposed to be a competitor for Zelle, Venmo and Cash App. https://www.emarketer.com/content/x-money-twitter-launch-adoption-uphill-battle-elon-musk
Mastodon’s CEO and creator is handing control to a new nonprofit organization https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/13/24342603/mastodon-non-profit-ownership-ceo-eugen-rochko Latest update from decentralized SM: Looks as though Threads may get blocked by many of the instance owners and/or users, due to Meta's decision to drop fact checkers and the latest updates to Meta's T+Cs (some vicious trolling will be allowed to increase clicks - and profits).
TikTok ban in US looms - could be final this Sunday Jan. 19, 2025 https://www.axios.com/2025/01/13/tiktok-ban-supreme-court-rednote-lemon8 A tidbit more: There are buyers lined up to buy TikTok in the US, however, ByteDance says they will not sell the US platform to any US company. It was bandied about that Elon Musk should buy it as he is looked upon favorably by the Chinese govt., and would not be shrugged off by ByteDance. However, Musk is still carrying a huge debt, re: Twitter purchase, so he may not be in a position to take on TikTok.
And now he abused his power to remove Asmongold checkmark because he hurt his feelings and leaked DMs that he even not understood correctly, what a joke
The TikToc ban was upheld by the US Supreme Court. Due to the issues at hand, some politics can not be avoided here... There are 3 national security-related reasons for the TikToc ban. The first is covert content manipulation, i.e., disinformation and perception management by China. which is about foreign actors trying to shape American opinions, attitudes, and behavior. The second is the espionage threat posed by China’s data collection, in the form of potential blackmail for recruiting spies and compromising US intelligence activities. The third is referenced to in “the classified record.” It is more serious than either disinformation or espionage, re: China’s recent hacks and malware operations targeting critical infrastructure and U.S. communications service providers. On social media, users are both consumers and producers of content. 'Free speech' was argued. The US Supreme Court largely sidestepped the constitutional argument and elevated the national security interests of the country. It is now law. Anything that follows will obviously be political - for that reason I go no further.
I can completely understand that they are banning TikTok, India did the same. I wonder who would be willing to pay $40 billion for TikTok, hopefully not Elon Musk because it would probably be bad for Tesla shareholders. I remember when he bought Twitter, Tesla crashed to $100 because he sold quite a few shares. But what I do think is weird, is that Meta isn't profiting from all of this. Why don't they make a separate app for Instagram Reels? This TikTok stuff should be easy to copy. I mean, I've read that people are switching to some other Chinese app named RedNote, so apparantly they are not happy with the way that Instagram works.

Yeah, but there would be no content nor creators. Chicken and egg problem. TikTok was initially popular for young audience. It was a mean to escape from social media populated by their parents, teachers, grandparents etc
Oracle and Microsoft are reportedly in talks to take over TikTok https://www.npr.org/2025/01/25/g-s1-44779/tiktok-ban-deal-trump-oracle * Without the algorithm, Tiktok is valued at approx. $20 billion US. ** The WH has proposed a 60% tariff on all Chinese imports, starting in 2025.
I'm not sure what you mean with this. Instagram is focused on images and TikTok on videos. So what apparantly all of those content creators/influencers have been doing is to use both apps side by side. So that's why I suggested that Meta could make Instagram Reels (focused on videos) a separate app, but instead he decided to integrate it with the Instagram app, juts like he did with Threads. Apparantly users don't like this integration, that's why they stuck with TikTok.
