Spreading tiny parts of junk traffic across a wide range of IP addresses can wreak havoc, while avoiding detection

According to security firm Nexusguard, cybercriminals attack the large attack surface of ASN-level (autonomous system number) CSPs by spreading ‘tiny attack traffic’ across hundreds of IP addresses.
This allows them to avoid being detected.

The activity usually goes like this: first cybercriminals map out the network landscape of their target, and try to identify key IP ranges. Then they inject tiny pieces of junk traffic to mix with the legitimate one. The small size allows it to bypass detection.

“Diffused traffic can cause communications service providers to easily miss large-scale DDoS attacks in the making, which is why these organizations will need to share the load with the cloud at the network edge to minimize attack impact.”

The traffic flow involved may be so small that not only does the server stay online, but the defensive tools aren’t even triggered. This stealth approach broadens the scope for more specific protocol attacks which target elements of the system that sit between the public internet and the target network.

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks rose by 180 percent between 2018 and 2019, according to new figures from Neustar.

The global information services and technology company said its Security Operations Centre registered an increase in DDoS attacks across all size categories. Attacks of up to 5Gbps (“small-scale attacks") exhibited the greatest growth and made up more than three quarters of all attacks.
Meanwhile, the number of simple single-vector attacks and complex four- and five-vector attacks dropped, leading researchers to believe attackers have settled into a “Goldilocks zone”.

“Large, headline-making DDoS attacks do still take place, but many cybersecurity professionals believe that smaller attacks are being used simply to degrade site performance or as a smokescreen for other forms of cybercrime, such as data theft or network infiltration, which the perpetrator can execute more easily while the target’s security team is busy fighting a DDoS attack,” said Rodney Joffe, Senior Technologist at Neustar.

Low-bandwidth distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks increased by a whopping 233% in the first half of 2021 - some 95% of which were less than 1 Gbps.

The new data - from DDoS mitigation vendor Nexusguard - reflects a shift by attackers to execute high packet-rate loads of smaller traffic volumes in order to evade DDoS detection and mitigation systems. Researchers from Nexusguard say they believe the attacks came via low-cost DDoS-for-hire services.

These "bit-and-piece" DDoS attacks can sneak past service provider networks because they are less conspicuous. Nexusguard spotted an 84% increase in UDP attacks over the previous six months.
