Will the real Slimbook please stand up? Here be a long, thorough, positive review of Kubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver, installed on brand-new Slimbook Pro2 laptop, including installation with LVM and full-disk encryption, boot speeed, initial setyup and configuration, customization, extra apps, hardware compatibility - peripherals, smartphones, webcam, touchpad, suspend & resume, hd scaling and associated challenges - Plasma and Gtk applications, Firefox, Chrome, and fonts, resource usage, performance, battery life, some problems and niggles, and more. Enjoy.

Thanks for the review, Kubuntu has replaced Windows as my work OS and reading your impressions of it is enlightening.

One question: the "about system" image says this is running Plasma version 5.12.6. The "desktop theme" image below the "HD display & scaling" headline shows some of the available themes. If I like the Breeze Dark icons but prefer the Oxygen clock, is there a way to mix-and-match this clock with those icons?

Not really. You can use different workspace theme, desktop theme and icons, plus windows decorations, but icons sets are sort of ... complete.
You can hack this and symlink specific app icons across themes, but that's a bit ugly.

There's still no one single button to scale, welcome to linux.

There is - but it does not look that well. To be fair, Gnome does scaling better.
A whole article on that thingie coming soon.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into whether it's possible to install an older version of Plasma over a newer one...
