setting up a pac file help.

i d/l a pac from schooner website saved to desktop opened up options changed proxy settings ect. use the pac on my h/d and i dont see anything happening i went to netster.com and it still got through? how do i do this pac correctly?

windows xp, firefox 1.5

I used to work with a pacfile for more then a year. it works as a proxy to filter the garbage, can be used to block ads, Ip's, well in fact in can block a lot.
I used the pacfile from spyblocker (builtin feature)

This is an older help file created by us (Bethrezen and me), remember to not use the program folder from spyblocker but use the locationpath where you put your pacfile in.

I don't remember exactly if the download from our pacfile will work as standalone so....

How do I use this with Internet Explorer ?

First download the iblock.exe then copy it to your SpyBlocker folder
Usually (C:\ProgramFiles\Spyblocker Software) and restart SpyBlocker

However if you didn't install SpyBlocker to its default location then you will need to place the iblock.exe in the appropriate folder

Open Internet Explorer

Click Tools & Select Internet Options

Select Connections Tab

Select A Connection And Click the Settings Button Or Lan Settings
(Depending on whether you are setting up for a Lan or Dial up account)

Check Automatically Detect Settings & Use Automatic Configuration Script

Enter location of the Pac File.
Usually (File://C:\Program Files\Spyblocker Software\PacFile.Pac)

However if you didn't install SB to its default location you will need to change the above URL appropriately to point to where the Pac file is actually located

Select Security Tab

Select Local intranet and Click Sites button

Uncheck Include All Sites That Bypass The Proxy Server

OK everything and close Internet Options

One other change is necessary. You must turn off the auto-proxy caching mechanism, Unfortunately, there is no interface to change this setting in the Internet Options, but you can use a clever .REG file to not only change the option, but add a checkbox for it on the Advanced page of the Internet Options.

Copy the lines below Open Notepad and paste the lines into it save it with the file extension .REG then double-click on the file to load the settings into the registry

Then go to the Pac File set up screen check show alerts and hit create you should get a message saying the Pac File had been successfully created close the set up screen and the SpyBlocker screen then restart your browser you should get a message saying SpyBlocker Software Blocking Pac File loaded and that's it

Remember when ever you make a change to your Pac File there are 3 things you need to do

1.) Hit the create button to apply the change

2.) Clear you cache if you don't your blocks wont work because your browser is loading from its cache file

3.) Restart your browser if you don't your blocks wont work because the Pacfile needs to be reloaded when ever you make changes unfortunately the Pacfile generator has no way to do this for you so therefore the only way to reload the Pacfile after modification is to completely shutdown and restart your browser

How do I chain my proxy software to the Pac file

First open SpyBlocker

Select Pac File

Check Use Proxy

Enter the port number that your Proxy software uses

Select Create

That’s it now your proxy software should be running through the Pac file

Hi, I got it working, thanx!

Okay another question, I want to block Internet explorer from connection to unspecified websites with the pac file. so i whitelisted a couple of sites that are okay e.g. windowsupdate.microsoft.com. now I need some help with blocking every other website.. I know some reg exp. but i only know of adblocks version (for firefox)
I tried stuff like ... but i dont think they work. 0.o

seriously, I had that tool and that did it for me! I didn't do it manually! I used to block ads and banners and imported a lot of IP's back then .. maybe someone else can help you further .. from the language I see, probably Kye-u is the person you need! He knows a lot about all this stuff!

hi

if you are looking for helpo with reguler expressions try talking to the people that created adblock for firefox thay tryed to teach me but its way over my head

at some point when i have the time ill be putting together some info on the use of pacfiles for my guide depending on what i can find and may well include an advanced section dealing with reguler expressions again depending on what i can fine but ultimatley you are gonin to find it quite hard to get help with this one coz this is prity advanced stuff that not menay prople understand

so your best bet would be to go to the adblock forum and try asking there
