Any news on when this problem is going to be resolved? It's been working OK over the weekend, but again today I haven't been able to update at all, tried manually updating repeatedly, but each time "ERROR: sorry, the server is not ready to serve, please try again later".

This issue has been going on for weeks now, I'm surprised/disappointed that AVG/ewido have not made a statement, or at least acknowledged there is still an ongoing problem. :(

Are users with the paid version experiencing this, or is it just the free versions?

I'm a reseller, all my users are having this issue - all paid versions. My own systems now run under Vista, so I can't use AVG personally.

    Bring back Ewido! :thumb:

    Thanks for info. :thumb:

I have to say the official ewido/AVG support (or lack of) on this particular issue in this forum has been disgusting. Please tell us at the very least that you have acknowledged there is a problem.

Sorry for the late reply and for all the inconvenience! Yes, we are working on it. The situation should have already been improved for registered users. We will also introduce a modified update mechanism in the next build which should generally reduce the load on your side and also on the update servers. This change and many other bugfixes will be included in the "Vista-Ready" build which will be available around mid of April (at least as a beta). Again, sorry for the inconvenience!

Since there are server problems I'll have AVG anti spyware as a shredder because of the shredder inside of the program. Can't find a free one so far.

If by a 'shredder' you mean a secure means of deletion, there are many free programs and the most well-known, and best in my opinion, is the Heidi Eraser program. You can use it to shred files up to 35 runs - there's nothing more secure than that!

My AVG Anti-Spyware program has refused to update since 17 March.

Let's face it this is pathetic as this has been an ongoing problem since AVG took it over from Ewido. It was never a problem under Ewido.

There is simply no point PERIOD in having a definitions-based malware program if it cannot be trusted to update all the time.

And please don't try and pull the wool over our eyes by saying this is anything to do with its wider use under AVG - AdAware and SpyBot are both much more widely used and NEVER have update problems.

Thank goodness I've never wasted a penny on actually buying it!

    Internal Updater unable to connect:
Error. Sorry, the server is not ready to serve...

    Manual update page works though:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Y'all REALLY need to make it easier to find the Manual Download page! o_O

Sorry but do you think I would waste my time posting here if I wasn't able to connect via my web browser, AVG Anti Virus and every other program needing connectivity on my system, at the time I tried updates for AVG Anti-Spyware (Have you forgotten it's no longer called 'Ewido') o_O?

I suggest you leave answers to an AVG Technical respondent.

Just because a program is updatable by one or more users is irrelevant if a whole number of others CAN'T.
And clearly the two other posters after your useless reply proves it.

I am now getting a RED WARNING saying I'm 'at risk by not updating'.

I don't use AVG Anti-Spyware onguard (and only use it as a periodic system or shell scanner) simply because I'm not prepared to pay for a program that, in terms of its updating reliability, is barely past Beta efficiency.

Ewido was fantastic - this current program is crap.

Frankly, that reply doesn't answer the problems being faced NOW (and frequently in the PAST) by users facing constant update problems.
Offering a fix in mid-April is totally pathetic.
No one in their right mind would waste one-penny on an anti-malware program that cannot GUARANTEE successful online update on every single day that definitions are updated.
Since spyware is much greater than viruses by a factor of more than 10; that spyware is actually the greatest current threat to system stability; that Ewido had a justly deserved reputation, this is all very bad news for people wanting to protect themselves.
I personally will be answering the many dozens of questioners a week that I give support to, around net security, on one of the most heavily used web browser support forums, with a section recommending that they do NOT even consider buying AVG Anti-Spyware and do not rely on it as even a major line of defence, let alone a principal one.

For paying customers, the situation is definitely different. They do get updates as they have paid for "Premium updates" and thus have priority on our servers. The problem is that we get millions of new free users each week and unfortuntately, the update process has reached a point where it simply doesn't scale sufficient anymore. Even adding dozens of new servers wouldn't really help to improve the situation. You can be assured that we have done everything that helps but regrettably the new build is the only solution, sorry. :(

I too had this update problem that others were experiencing for a couple of weeks. I thought that perhaps AVG had 'timed me out' as far as my using just the free version, and was denying further updates.

What I wound up doing was uninstalling and downloading a fresh version. Some AS apps will allow that, but with others once your 30 day trial or whatever is over, you're cooked. No more downloads ever, of either programs or updates. Let me note that this uninstall/download technique is a good way to keep up with newer program versions; daily updates with some AS apps provide only definitions/signatures/traces, not newer versions of the program itself.

My basic observation is 'what do you expect for nothing?' The free trial period that maybe has full features, and any subsequent free versions with limited features are just that. Free. It costs money to run an AS business just like any other company, for-profit or not-for-profit. Bandwidth for daily downloads is not free. If a company provides support for unregistered users, that's not free either. I suspect few companies do today; any wonder why?

Sure, I'd love to have everything for free, but it's neither realistic nor fair. If you want a full-featured free AS app, there is always Spybot. Unfortunately, Spybot has fallen behind other AS apps in its performance. No doubt part of the reason is that they don't have the funds and paid staff to keep up with other AS vendors all trying to keep up with all the malware out there.

I myself pay for Spy Sweeper and NIS 2006. I have made voluntary contributions to support Spybot. Everything else is free, and I am grateful to have them, as collectively they provide some incremental protection for my computer that I would otherwise be unwilling to pay for.

What is the vendors' motivation for providing free versions of their AS? It seems obvious that it is to encourage users to ante up to the paid version at some point. I suppose there is also some minimal desire to make the web a safer place, but vendors no doubt realize that only a small percentage of those who use the free versions will ever pay for the full ones. Free versions are just part of the cost of doing business.

I haven't been able to manually update AVG AS definitions using GUI since March 10th. FYI I just tried today and all is working OK for me. Maybe they corrected the problem? :) Now showing 696,985 signatures in database.

You are talking pure crap. Two other posters after you also pointed out they couldn't update with the free version.

Again, please DON'T respond to issues for which you have no technical knowledge to answer.

This really is the WORST kind of useless reply.

The benefits of the paid version are supposed to be thus:

    1. OnGuard real-time protection
    2. AUTOMATIC real-time updates

You are attempting to very badly MISLEAD the freeware version users.

    1. Manually updating definitions should be available at all times otherwise your freeware version is USELESS.

    2. AVG 7.5 Anti-Virus is used in its FREE version by so many more people than the paid version that the xfactor is enormous - so why no update problems there??

    3. SpyBot Search and Destroy is ONLY FREE, used by so many MORE users than AVG Anti-Spyware that again the xfactor is so great as to make AVGAS a minnow - yet no problems EVER updating that?

    4. Same as above goes for Ad Aware SE personal

You do NOT get 'millions' of free users each week - you consistently get only a fraction of new users compared to SpyBot and Ad Aware (you simply don't have the worldwide profile that they do) and yet they manage to provide a program that is up to date.

And as you very well know the update problem has affected PAID users as well many times in the past and even this problem recently - now that is BAD!!!

    ~Snip~

I will NEVER recommend AVGAS now (free or paid) and will actually counsel against its use or any reliance on it.

I am sorry but you are talking from somewhere other than a repository of any knowledge.

Read my other reply to 'Peter' the Ewido/AVG techie.

Manual updates ARE supposed to be available in the free version since if they were not (as they currently aren't for many users) you would realise - unless you are totally and utterly stupid - it makes the program totally USELESS.

The idea that SpyBot or AdAware SE have 'fallen behind' is technical rubbish. They are constantly tested by experts and found to be more or less equal as a first line defence.

SpyBot aso happens to have other real time system defences in its 'Advanced' (still free) mode that AVGAS doesn't.

    No , I am not !

    But I can . You'll see .

The fact that I don't work for Grisoft/Ewido doesn't mean I don't have technical knowledge . Even though I work as an IT , it is not necessary to have technical knowledge to say "I can update" or "I cannot update"

Here are five screenshots made 3 minutes ago . I download Ewido free micro version , run it , update it and perform full scan . Update is successful .

I am sorry but I find it really offencive to say I don't have knowldge and that I lie . That is not true! Have a nice day and just believe people more !

    With respect : HiTech_boy

Actually, everything you've said has been total crap because it is NOT relevant to those users who CANNOT update.

Peter of Ewido/Grisoft has already ADMITTED the problemo_O

    Can you not read?

Again, as you have nothing to say that helps the users who have a problem, say NOTHING.

(Oh and here is some free REAL advice - stop using a web browser that the US/UK and various other government IT Security departments consider at risk from continuing security bugs, and start using one like Firefox that doesn't use ActiveX (highly insecure) coding and has an architecture that makes it far safer than IE.)

(Oh, and once you have installed Mozilla Firefox, install its unique extension 'NoScript' and you can selectively allow Javascript on those sites you know to be safe; only where you know it is needed to access all the site's features you require, and therefore blocks all unneeded and third-party injection of JS which - as an IT person you should know - is one of the easiest and most common routes for malware injection. It also massively reduces RAM usage when surfing. Now if only IE could do that!)

(Oh and NEVER, EVER click on a website hyperlink in an email - copy and paste it into your web browser - if you don't understand why, ask me and I'll explain it.)

(Oh and never, ever open an attachment in any email that you were not expecting - including in an email from friends/known contacts who you should phone/Instant Message first to check it was intended.)

(Oh and never, ever rely on any definitions-based AV or anti-malware program as a first or principle line of defence.)

(Oh and never, ever connect to the internet without inbound AND outbound Firewall protection.)
    :)

A few off topic posts removed and We are going to leave the remaining off topic personal bickering remarks instead of chopping this thread to bits. However....this ewido server issue discussion will continue without the un-needed less than respectful remarks being made thru out this thread up to this point. There are and have been server issues for quite sometime and are known by the ewido folks as Peter mentioned. There will not however be a lynch mob mentality continued in this thread and ask once agian to discuss the server issues but do so with much more respect than has been shown of late. Keep the side personal remarks directed toward other members to your self or take it to Private message.

    Thanks,
    Bubba
