The big picture: There's been enough appetite in the mobile streaming and gaming markets to drive growth on both fronts. Looking back at 2019, consumers spent $61.7 billion on mobile games, and rushed in to sign up for Disney+, spending almost $97 million on the service in the two months since its launch. Meanwhile, TikTok propelled itself to become the second most downloaded app of the year.

The latest numbers for Q4 2019 from SensorTower are in, and it looks like people playing mobile games spent nearly $62 billion on Android and iOS. That's a 13 percent increase over 2018.
Games made up 68 percent of App Store revenue, and 84 percent on Google Play, which by now shouldn't come as a surprise.

Overall, Google had more downloads for its apps than Facebook for the first time in five years, mostly thanks to iOS users. But more importantly, Disney convinced 18 million Android users and 12 million iOS users to download Disney+.

To put things in better context, Disney+ was able to reach more than 70 percent of Netflix's peak revenue in December. In the two months since launch, SensorTower says the app has been downloaded 41 million times and has generated more than $97 million in revenue.

Consumers downloaded a record 204 billion apps in 2019, up 6% from 2018 and up 45% since 2016, and spent $120 billion on apps, subscriptions and other in-app spending in the past year. The average mobile user, meanwhile, is spending 3.7 hours per day using apps. This data and more comes from App Annie’s annual report, “State of Mobile,” which highlights the biggest app trends for the past year, and sets forecasts for the years ahead.

According to App Annie, the record growth in mobile downloads in 2019 can be attributed to the growth taking place in emerging markets like India, Brazil and Indonesia, which have seen downloads soar 190%, 40% and 70%, respectively, since 2016.
The record numbers are notable also, given that App Annie’s analysis excludes re-installs and app updates.

In particular, dating apps like Tinder and video apps like Netflix and Tencent Video topped 2019’s consumer spend charts, thanks to subscription revenue.
Ad spending combined with consumer spending is expected to reach $380 billion worldwide by 2020, App Annie forecast.

Apptopia had previously reported TikTok was generating $50 million per quarter.

However, App Annie’s recent “State of Mobile” report put it in fourth place, behind Messenger, Facebook, and WhatsApp — not just behind WhatsApp, as Sensor Tower does.
When it comes to monetization, TikTok is challenged because it doesn’t have as much personal information about its users, compared with a network like Facebook and its rich user profile data. That means advertisers can’t target ads based on user interests and demographics in the same way.

What TikTok lacks in revenue, it makes up for in user engagement. According to App Annie, time spent in the app was up 210% year-over-year in 2019, to reach a total 68 billion hours.

Reached for comment, TikTok confirmed it doesn’t share its own stats on installs or revenue, so third-party estimates are the only way to track the app’s growth for now.

I honestly didn't know that mobile gaming was this big. Perhaps that's why Sony stopped developing the PSP. I never play games on my phone, and I'm not willing to pay for those games anyway. I will stick to my Nintendo Switch Lite and desktop gaming.

They say love don't cost a thing. But according to figures from app data and analytics platform App Annie, that might not be true.

In search of love or lust, consumers dropped $2.2 billion on dating apps last year, according to data culled from App Annie's State of Mobile Report, which came out earlier in the year. The amount is double what was spent two years ago, the report notes.
Apps Tinder and Bumble came in first and second in terms of consumer spending.

Though the average amount of money each person spent varies from app to app, the report found that some apps snag about $90 per year.
