"U.S. moves closer to recalling Tesla’s self-driving software...

[US inquiry to probe suspicions that Tesla’s autopilot is designed to auto-quit when a crash is imminent]

'On Thursday, NHTSA said it had discovered in 16 separate instances [when Tesla vehicles mysteriously plowed into the scene of an existing accident where first responders were already present] that Autopilot 'aborted vehicle control less than one second prior to the first impact,' suggesting the driver was not prepared to assume full control over the vehicle.

CEO Elon Musk has often claimed that accidents cannot be the fault of the company, as data it extracted invariably showed Autopilot was not active in the moment of the collision.

While anything that might indicate the system was designed to shut off when it sensed an imminent accident might damage Tesla’s image, legally the company would be a difficult target..."

"Tesla is sued by drivers over alleged false Autopilot, Full Self-Driving claims

(Reuters) - Tesla Inc was sued on Wednesday in a proposed class action accusing Elon Musk's electric car company of misleading the public by falsely advertising its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features.

The complaint accused Tesla and Musk of having since 2016 deceptively advertised the technology as fully functioning or 'just around the corner' despite knowing that the technology did not work or was nonexistent, and made vehicles unsafe.

Briggs Matsko, the named plaintiff, said Tesla did this to 'generate excitement' about its vehicles, attract investments, boost sales, avoid bankruptcy, drive up its stock price and become a 'dominant player' in electric vehicles..."

Bingo! Excellent article @hawki. Thanks for pulling it up.
I suspected all along that it was all about generating excitement and thus MONEY on a concept NOT NEAR ready for adaptation into the public sphere- Safety First was ignored.

"Tesla faces U.S. criminal probe over self-driving claims

Tesla Inc is under criminal investigation in the United States over claims that the company's electric vehicles can drive themselves...

The U.S. Department of Justice launched the previously undisclosed probe last year following more than a dozen crashes, some of them fatal, involving Tesla’s driver assistance system Autopilot, which was activated during the accidents...

As early as 2016, Tesla’s marketing materials have touted Autopilot’s capabilities..."

    ^This

Putting on display access to so called self-driving vehicles on a public throughfare, public motorway was at the start a recipe that couldn't been more wrong. It doesn't matter what the technology. One can even look at recent rail mishaps. Like for just an example a public transportation computer train (manned) in Philadelphia where it speeded up with no way to cut off the rolling motion before a critical incident ensued.
