Audi study finds high interest in self-driving cars, but far from a blanket statement

While autonomous cars and self-driving technology aren't ready to roll in the near future, such technology is bound to become widespread in the decades to come. Yet despite intrigue in the technology and advances, there remains one hurdle that could prove difficult to clear: human acceptance.
A new study from German luxury brand Audi (specifically its &Audi Initiative) painted two distinct portraits of individuals around the world.

Internationally, 82% surveyed said they were interested in self-driving technology, but each country painted a very different picture. Those in China and South Korea are incredibly enthusiastic and interested with 98% and 94%, but on the other end of the spectrum, Japan and the US are far from as enthusiastic.

Breaking down the concerns of those that aren't thrilled with autonomous cars, Audi found plenty valid concerns. The vast majority (70%) are concerned with giving up control, per the international figures. How the car assesses situations independently from a human also concerned respondents with 65% noting the potential issue.

For over 100 years, automobiles have housed human passengers and the stuff they decided to take with them. Yet, the budding self-driving car industry shows a world where some vehicles may not need a cabin. That thought changes the way designers and engineers approach a vehicle.

Take the Scania AXL concept, which debuted on Tuesday. The fully autonomous work truck doesn't have a passenger cab. Without it, Scania approached the design in a radically different fashion. While the Swedish commercial vehicle manufacturer didn't explicitly state benefits, it's easy to imagine a vehicle like the AXL concept sans cab being far easier to maneuver in work spaces and on construction sites.
Details on the self-driving system were slim, but Scania said it will share more when the concept completes its first real-world tests next month.

Four Australian universities working with US counterparts have received a funding boost from the federal government to develop autonomous vehicles with strategic defence capabilities.

A team of electrical and biomedical engineers, led by Melbourne Uni’s Professor Girish Nair, are set to develop and explore the use of biologically-inspired technologies that mimic animals’ and humans’ ability to navigate diverse terrain without GPS or external instruction.

“To help deliver this next generation technology, our team will build on state-of-the-art techniques in automatic control, neuro-engineering, robotics and signal processing,” Nair said.
“Autonomous vehicles help keep troops a safe distance from harm and present solutions to a range of problems faced by our military personnel in the field,” she said.

A half-plane half drone nicknamed “Cora” has already been secretly been testing in New Zealand, it can carry two passengers for a distance of up to 100KM at a top speed of around 18 kilometres per hour.
In Australia, we are destined for an Uber Air service to start in Melbourne by 2023 (some predict it could be as early as 2023.

If you look at many of these passenger drones they are heavily controlled by technology and are reliant on a lot of information from their own internal sensors/technology but will rely on a lot of external systems as well such as 4G/5G technology, radar and many talk a mesh framework that will allow them to know where other drones are to navigate each other with ease.
What happens if a malicious actor hacks the mesh network?

The first step is quite simple, make sure that all of these systems can be manually controlled by passengers not fully autonomous, secondly, think of security in the first instance
We are certainly going to have a challenging future with all things interconnected but we can’t mess around with things like passenger drones or autonomous cars the costs if we do will be too great.

China's Baidu rolls out self-driving cars for public trial

The machines cometh, China. Baidu, which can be considered China's Google, said on Thursday that the first fleet of 45 self-driving cars are being released for public trial in the country. Specifically, they'll wander in Changsha, in the Hunan province.
The 45 cars come from a close partnership between Baidu and local automaker FAW Group.

Nevertheless, a human operator will be onboard at all times, just in case. Baidu said the public is welcome to try out the self-driving cars in a ride-sharing service sort of operation. Right now, the cars will be geofenced in a particular area, and they'll be able to travel on about 31 miles of open road.

Customers who have a Full Self-Driving capable car or Enhanced Autopilot package already had a Summon feature through the Tesla mobile app. Now they have Smart Summon. And everyone is trying it out.

NVIDIA partner Optimus Ride deploys self-driving vehicles in New York City
Powered by the NVIDIA DRIVE platform, Optimus Ride has already managed to move more than 2,000 people who commute through the Brooklyn Navy Yard industrial complex. According to NVIDIA, Optimus Ride is using low-speed, geofenced vehicles that will help boost last-mile connectivity along busy routes.
Now that NVIDIA and one of its partners have proved that the former's platform can be deployed successfully (and quickly) in real-world conditions, this could mean fewer partners for Waymo and more for NVIDIA.

As you can imagine, people have been trying out the Smart Summon feature eagerly, leading to Twitter posts of people discovering that maybe, just maybe, it’s not exactly perfect.

[...] the Smart Summon algorithm isn’t looking at things that human drivers would notice, like the fact that they appear to be driving the wrong way down a lane.
Tesla does specify that it’s a Beta release, which is fine for most software, but does it make sense when that software is driving a full-sized car in a public space?
This is a tricky one. I’m pretty sure we’ll see more Smart Summon issues and fender-benders because the world is messy and confusing. I reached out to Tesla for comment, and will update when I hear something.

“For the commercial routes, we have two customers profiles: one is a business customer, so perhaps from the airport to the business centre, or for tourists flying from Marina Bay to Sentosa,” Alexander Zosel told Reuters.
Volocopter says it has clocked over 1,000 test flights: some piloted by humans and others flown by remote control or autonomously on pre-determined routes.
Zosel said the first commercial flights will be piloted, leaving room for only one passenger, but that in five to 10 years he hopes to transition to fully-autonomous flying.

Yet with strict rules for flying unmanned aircraft - especially after drones caused a series of airport delays this year - and a lack of helipads, it remains to be seen whether Volocopter can meet its lofty ambitions for the city-state.

On September 27, Tesla rolled out its biggest software update to date, Software Version 10.0, for its lineup of automobiles. In it, a key feature called Smart Summon, which remotely hails your Tesla to pick you, was publicly made available.
Since then, the feature has been in the news across the internet with people being both surprised by its eeriness and skeptical about its safety in a variety of situations

Now, in an emailed statement, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the U.S. road-safety regulator, has claimed that it is aware of the concerns and "will not hesitate to act" if it finds Smart Summon to be disrupting safety (via Bloomberg).
This is after the Department of Motor Vehicles in California concluded that Smart Summon is not subject to the agency's regulations pertaining to autonomous vehicles.

“Tesla does not need a permit to deploy the feature in California. As with any new technology, the DMV indicated to Tesla that clear and effective communication to the driver about the technology’s capabilities and intended use is necessary.”
But this certainly does not signal clear waters for Tesla as the authority has the power to recall features and systems that present safety risks.

Directors of the £13.6m Driven programme, a partially government-funded consortium, said it had “exceeded their initial plan” and was a significant step in confirming autonomous vehicles could operate in real-life situations in a large European city.

Zoox says it selected Las Vegas because the region offers an opportunity to extend learning in a second dense urban environment and one that it says has diverse and unique use cases compared to driving in San Francisco. He and colleagues believe their miniature, cheap, open source, self-driving “platform” will give 33 scientists of all stripes chances to experiment with cutting-edge technology at a critical moment: before autonomous vehicles hit the streets en masse. In August, the group won a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to pursue the idea.

If the accidents pile up, though, Tesla itself is sure to be brought into a legal fight, insurance industry experts said.

The incidents highlight a shifting landscape for long-held assumptions about auto insurance and accident blame as more car manufacturers offer features that can automate parallel parking, avoid collisions, and take over steering during traffic, among other things.

“This was an interesting one to explain to my insurance,” wrote one user in YouTube and Twitter video posts of a Tesla scraping against a garage door frame while exiting in summon mode. “Silly feature cost me time and money.”
Tesla did not respond to a request for comment but Chief Executive Elon Musk on Wednesday tweeted that there were more than 550,000 Smart Summon uses in the first few days.
