"Waymo self-driving minivan involved in crash in Arizona

[Waymo is the self-driving car initiative from Google's parent company Alphabet.]

A self-driving vehicle operated by Waymo was involved in a crash in Chandler, Arizona, on Friday afternoon, according to local news stations. Images of the crash scene showed a Waymo minivan with its side caved in and another vehicle with a smashed front end. There were minor injuries reported at the scene.

Chandler police said the Waymo van was in autonomous mode with an occupant behind the wheel at the time of the crash,.."

Road systems with families-people-children in proximity is a horrible experiment.

We seem to be witnessing a 21st century design on the playing with the lives with seemingly inventive motivations but every bit as dangerous as pre-WW2 era experiments.

"Police: Sedan that collided with Waymo vehicle ran red light [and Waymo vehicle was in manual mode]

A driver whose sedan collided with a self-driving vehicle owned by Waymo has been cited for running a red light, police in a Phoenix suburb said Saturday.

Chandler Police Department spokesman Seth Tyler said that the Waymo-owned Chrysler minivan was in manual mode and slowing for the red light when the collision occurred Friday.

Police had said initially that the Waymo minivan was in autonomous mode with a person in the driver's seat..."

"Uber autonomous software reportedly set to ignore pedestrian

Uber has determined that the Arizona crash that resulted in a pedestrian fatality in March was likely because its self-driving car's software was tuned not to react to certain road objects,...

    https://www.axios.com/uber-autonomo...ath-3fa57b71-5935-478a-bb5c-6b725039e55a.html

"...The car’s sensors detected the pedestrian, who was crossing the street with a bicycle, but Uber’s software decided it didn’t need to react right away. That’s a result of how the software was tuned. Like other autonomous vehicle systems, Uber’s software has the ability to ignore “false positives,” or objects in its path that wouldn’t actually be a problem for the vehicle, such as a plastic bag floating over a road. In this case, Uber executives believe the company’s system was tuned so that it reacted less to such objects. But the tuning went too far, and the car didn’t react fast enough..."
