Cruise is testing computer vision and sound detection AI to help autonomous cars respond to passing emergency vehicles, a company spokesperson told VentureBeat in an email. More specifically, the systems are alert for the sound and sight of sirens to understand if a police car, fire truck, or ambulance is in motion.

n a video provided to VentureBeat, Cruise senior engineering manager Sean Harris demonstrated the visual and sound detection systems in action. In the video, the vehicle pauses at an intersection and waits for an ambulance to drive by.
“For most vehicles, we don’t care about [whether[ they’re making noise or have lights flashing on their roof, but for an emergency vehicle that’s really important because we need to behave differently in this kind of active state,” [...]

In the years ahead, if autonomous vehicles become more prevalent on congested city roads and emergency vehicle detection systems are reliable, we could see a drastic decrease in emergency call response times.

In the first solid indication that it is considering bringing the technology to the UK, the app-based taxi firm said any new bodies set up to regulate the vehicles should not "impede innovation or create artificial barriers".
The firm was the only major US company working on self-driving technology to respond to a Law Commission consultation on how autonomous cars should be regulated.

The Law Commission said it was planning a further consultation on autonomous taxi fleets, such as the one which Uber is likely to operate.
“Our intention is to publish a second consultation paper this autumn about how those who operate automated passenger services should be licensed,” it said.

Bumpers are an important part of a vehicle, giving a level of protection from minor and major impacts before having to rely on the rest of the car's frame and bodywork to take any blows. For smaller knocks, bumpers can give vehicles a softer blow than if they didn't otherwise exist, and potentially eliminating any damage to the car altogether.

Apple believes it has come up with another design, in a patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday titled "Extendable bumpers for vehicles." In the filing, Apple suggests how an inflatable bladder behind the bumper could inflate and deflate to allow the bumper to move in and out from the vehicle.
There are a few reasons this could be useful. First, the use of an air cushion behind the bumper could provide some form of impact protection that provides some give, but without necessarily resulting in any damage to the bumper itself, as with the plastic cell structure technique.

Israel-based Viziblezone wants to make it easier for self-driving cars to spot pedestrians, even if they aren’t yet in the field of view of the car’s sensors. I haven’t heard of all that many pedestrian detection startups, but there is a first for everything and if nothing else, Viziblezone is tackling an important issue, with millions of pedestrians being injured by cars every year.

To warn cars of nearby pedestrians, Viziblezone, which is part of OurCrowd’s Labs/02 incubator, is relying on smartphones and detectors inside the vehicle. The company argues that its solution will become especially useful once self-driving cars become the norm.

The Kar-go autonomous vehicle uses an Nvidia Drive PX graphics processing unit (GPU) system to run real-time image detection for autonomous driving. It also includes a robot picker, which is used at the delivery destination to grab the package ready for the customer.
Unlike autonomous cars, which are being designed to drive on any road, Kar-go will have defined local driving routes, which Sachiti said means it can learn normal activities and objects that appear on its driving routes.

However, in the event of any emergencies, he said Kar-go would slow down and stop automatically.
Sachiti expects to have one Kar-go vehicle piloting autonomous deliveries within three months and anticipates that autonomous deliveries via Kar-go will roll out in 2020.

The Information's Amir Efrati reports that Tesla has suffered a fresh wave of Autopilot departures.

"At least 11 members of the software team, or close to 10% of the total group, including some longtime members, departed in the past few months," Efrati writes. "These departures follow Mr. Musk's removal of the Autopilot group's leader Stuart Bowers around the start of May."
Is Musk underestimating the difficulty of full self-driving?
Musk has long been optimistic about Tesla's Autopilot progress.
But other companies have found the transition from "feature complete" to full autonomy to be quite difficult. Waymo, for example, has had cars capable of driving on a wide range of road types since about 2015. Yet four years later, the company still has safety drivers behind the wheel for most trips.
