In the last week, two different people have captured video of Tesla vehicles traveling down a freeway with an apparently sleeping driver behind the wheel.
Incidents involving Tesla get more attention partly because people are very interested in Tesla stories but also because the design of Autopilot makes it relatively easy for the car to continue down the road without driver supervision.

So we shouldn't assign too much blame to Tesla for sleeping-driver problems. Drivers fall asleep in every car model, and Autopilot has probably prevented some crashes that would have occurred without it.
At the same time, there is clearly room for improvement here. Tesla—and other carmakers building driver-assistance systems—could follow the lead of GM and Subaru and add eye-tracking technology to make sure drivers are actually paying attention to the road.

China-based Zhejiang Geely Holdings is tapping Zenuity, the joint venture between Volvo and Swedish technology company Veoneer, as its preferred driver assistance and autonomous vehicle software supplier for its range of car brands.

The supplier partnership solidifies business for Zenuity as it goes up against more established players in the industry. And it also hints at where some of Geely’s car brands are headed.
Zenuity also confirmed Wednesday that it plans to provide software that will allow unsupervised driving for Volvo’s next generation cars. Zenuity did not provide a timeline.

Waymo, Alphabet Inc.’s self-driving vehicle unit, is preparing to expand the scope of its autonomous tech efforts beyond the U.S. in a new partnership with the Renault-Nissan Alliance aimed at creating driverless mobility services for France and Japan.

A joint statement didn’t mention whether specific Renault or Nissan vehicles would be involved but instead said the effort is a first step to figuring out “long-term, profitable driverless mobility services operations,” adding that it may expand to other countries.
"This is an ideal opportunity for Waymo to bring our autonomous technology to a global stage, with an innovative partner,” Waymo CEO John Krafcik said.

Baidu is among the dozens of companies developing full-stack hardware and software solutions for self-driving vehicles, and it’s making steady progress toward its goal of full autonomy.

To that end, the Beijing-based tech giant today unveiled Apollo Lite, a vision-based framework that leverages multiple cameras to achieve level 4 autonomous driving — that is, operation with limited human oversight under select conditions as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
According to Baidu, Apollo Lite can process “vast” amounts of data generated by 10 cameras to detect objects up to 700 feet away while delivering real-time, 360-degree sensing of the environment.

“A robust vision-based system is critical to the safety of autonomous driving, especially in high-speed situations where real-time sensing is critical,” said Apollo’s technical committee head Liang Wang.

This Robot Will Make Any Car a Self-Driving Car

Israeli startup IVObility is developing a robot that can sit in the driver's seat of an ordinary vehicle and be the driver.
The robot does not require the vehicle to have special drive-by-wire equipment, because it has its own sensors and cameras that "see" what a driver sees.
The robot will launch in 2020, at first for government and commercial applications that don't run on public roads; a consumer-market version is being considered.

One of Airbus' Oregon projects is Vahana, a prototype of a single-seat autonomous air taxi that takes off vertically, like a helicopter. In Sanskrit, Vahana means "that which carries, that which pulls."
The prototype could be the answer to urban gridlock – but convincing the public could pose a challenge.

Argo AI and Carnegie Mellon will establish the Carnegie Mellon University Argo AI Center for Autonomous Vehicle Research, which will pursue advanced research projects to help overcome hurdles to enabling self-driving vehicles to operate in a wide variety of real-world conditions, such as winter weather or construction zones.
"We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Argo AI to shape the future of self-driving technologies," CMU President Farnam Jahanian said.

The center will give students access to the fleet-scale data sets, vehicles and large-scale infrastructure that are crucial for advancing self-driving technologies and, that otherwise would be difficult to obtain.

That means that 26% of new cars will have autonomous mobility by that year. Considering that there will be only 51,000 autonomous vehicles sold in 2021, this means that the adoption rate for these vehicles will snowball over the next 20 years.

Apple has hired dozens of hardware and software engineers from Drive.ai, according to news site Axios, in what appears to be part of a renewed effort by the iPhone and Mac maker to branch out into self-driving cars.

Five former Drive.ai employees have changed their LinkedIn profiles to say they left Drive.ai in June and joined Apple the same month. Four of those workers list “special projects” in their job titles. Those employees include data, systems and software engineers.

Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo, Uber Technologies Inc., Tesla Inc., General Motors Co.’s Cruise and other companies working on this technology talk fairly openly about their broad ambitions for autonomous transportation, milestones in progress and issues for the industry.

Apple does none of this. As far as I can tell, Cook’s discussions about Apple’s autonomous transportation project has never gone beyond the vague generalities in that Bloomberg TV interview.
It’s always Apple’s tendency to keep mum about a product in development until it’s perfect and ready for a world debut. But driverless cars are not smartphones or augmented reality glasses.
But Apple is taking the industry’s discretion to the absurd.

No single company can accomplish this in a vacuum. It requires engagement with transportation planners and researchers, input from legal experts, settling on safety benchmarks and working with suppliers. Apple may be doing some of this secretly, but that misses the point.
