Lyft investors are banking on self-driving cars, not ride-sharing

Lyft became the first ride-hailing app to go public on Friday, skyrocketing to a $23.4 billion valuation.
But don’t get too excited for drivers. Investments in Uber and Lyft are basically big bets on future products like autonomous vehicles, not the people behind the wheel.

Autonomous vehicles are already a major part of Lyft's strategy. It partnered with self-driving company Aptiv and opened a research facility in Silicon Valley called Level 5. Self-driving Lyfts are on the streets of Las Vegas.
Lyft has partnerships with companies to develop self-driving car tech, but unlike Uber and Alphabet's Waymo, it isn't building its own fleet of self-driving cars. Instead, it's showing how its platform can be incorporated into self-driving systems.

Lyft's IPO shows that even without profits, people want an app that can connect them to a ride. Soon, the question will be whether a human or robot picks you up.

Researchers from Tencent Keen Security Lab have published a report detailing their successful attacks on Tesla firmware, including remote control over the steering, and an adversarial example attack on the autopilot that confuses the car into driving into the oncoming traffic lane.
The researchers used an attack chain that they disclosed to Tesla, and which Tesla now claims has been eliminated with recent patches.

Half of U.S. adults think automated vehicles are more dangerous than traditional vehicles operated by people, while nearly two-thirds said they would not buy a fully autonomous vehicle, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll.
In the same poll, about 63 percent of those who responded said they would not pay more to have a self-driving feature on their vehicle, and 41 percent of the rest said they would not pay more than $2,000.

The findings are similar to those in a 2018 Reuters/Ipsos poll. They are consistent with results in surveys by Pew Research Center, the American Automobile Association and others. In March 2018, after the 2018 Reuters/Ipsos poll, an Uber vehicle operating in self-driving mode struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona.
For companies investing in autonomous vehicles, public mistrust and the unwillingness to pay for self-driving systems are an increasingly urgent problem.

While the public is asking, “When are we going to ride in autonomous cars?” Technology companies have been moving apace to test them on designated roads.
In China’s capital city Beijing, eight firms drove a total of 153,600 kilometers (95442.6 miles) through their autonomous fleets in 2018, and Baidu, the country’s largest search engine service seen as a local answer to Google, has built a big lead.

That’s according to new data released by Beijing’s transportation regulators in their first report on the city’s licensed self-driving cars.
Baidu registered nearly 140,000 kilometers in Beijing last year, representing about 91 percent of total self-driving distances traveled by the eight licensed transportation companies in the city.

We reported on UK start-up Wayve last year when it announced its existence, but they had nothing to show for their claims.
Now they say they do, and the results are not only fascinating but might also be genuinely innovative.

In fact, they are claiming a “world first” in demonstrating that a car working on their machine-learning platform can drive on roads it’s never seen before during training, and without an HD map of its environment. Other systems, like Waymo’s, rely on maps and rules to drive. Theirs, says Wayve, does not.

Kendall says: “The traditional approach used by all our competitors relies on HD-maps, expensive sensor suites and hand-coded rules that tell the car how to drive. We have built a system that learns end-to-end with machine learning. It is the first in the world to drive on urban roads it has never been on before. It uses compute/sensors which cost less than 10% of competitors.”

Why it matters: Automated vehicles are still being developed, and so are the methods to judge their safety. Shared global standards and regulations for self-driving cars would make it easier for manufacturers to design and sell vehicles around the world and help to build public trust.
What's happening: Next month in San Francisco, the World Economic Forum will convene about 40 global experts on AVs and urban mobility to start hammering out guidelines that could lead to global standards and regulations for AV safety.

The World Economic Forum is hoping companies and governments will share insights — not just raw data — as the technology is developing so they can be more agile in their regulatory stances.

Musk replied to the tweet, saying that the company is planning to put it to use once it launches its own fleet of autonomous vehicles to compete with the likes of Uber and Lyft, who are both developing their own autonomous vehicle technology with the hope of someday making driverless cars part of their business.
Specifically he said Tesla owners will be able to allow their car to act as part of an autonomous vehicle fleet thereby earning them some extra cash, and the camera will be a security measure in case a passenger "messes up" the car.

Late last year, Tesla's Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk said that the company's auto-parking capability dubbed Enhanced Summon would be ready for rollout sometime in early 2019 via an over-the-air software update. Musk has now tweeted that the upgrade will be finally going live next week.

The parking assist service will work to identify the car owner's phone location via the Tesla app and enable the vehicle to navigate to that spot in an autonomous manner. However, certain conditions must be met, including the 150-foot maximum distance between the car and the owner or the location that he or she has pinned.
Musk added that the feature will be arriving outside the United States, though its availability abroad will depend on certain parking rules and regulations. Enhanced Summon likely won't be allowed on public roads.

The Cadillac Super Cruise, which is capable of navigating most U.S. highways by itself, is plagued by the persistent problem of sunlight causing the system to suddenly disengage, according to Automotive News.
“Just as the sun makes it hard for you to see what’s ahead of you, it does the same thing for a camera,” said Navigant Research analyst Sam Abuelsamid. “It is a challenge.”

While the automotive industry grapples with the complexities of releasing self-driving cars on public roads, researchers at the University of Michigan and Ford Motor Co. are already looking ahead to a time when roads could be irrelevant.

UM's Center for Sustainable Systems and Ford teamed up to study the environmental impacts of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircrafts — also referred to as VTOLs or flying cars.
The study found that these flying electric vehicles, while not suitable for short commutes, could play a "niche role in sustainable mobility for longer trips."

The sustainability study, the first ever conducted for flying cars, comes as the automotive industry at large is focused heavily on autonomous and electric vehicles. Much of this focus is driven by emission regulation and a need to alleviate growing congestion problems in dense urban areas.

Here at Singapore’s autonomous vehicle (AV) test center, there’s no shortage of ways to put driverless vehicles through their paces—with slopes, crosswalks, bus lanes, traffic junctions, and even a crank course consisting of sharp 90-degree turns.

It’s a rain simulator—one of the few found in AV test centers around the world. CETRAN, or Singapore’s Centre of Excellence for Testing and Research of AVs, also has a flood simulator. And for the first time since the center’s opening in late 2017, those simulators will soon be put to use as two companies, including MIT startup nuTonomy, begin adverse weather testing of their AVs in the coming months.

Rain can also distort the images collected by a camera and “generate atmospheric veiling effects similar to mist or fog,” adds roboticist Daniela Rusfrom MIT who is working on the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology’s fleet of self-driving cars and golf buggies.

It's not exactly a gigantic number compared to conventional delivery companies.

Uber notes that its Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) — the group heading up development of its driverless solutions — has grown from a team of 40 Pittsburgh-based researchers in 2015 to a 1,000-person workforce spread across offices in San Francisco and elsewhere.

"We recently received a small number of reports from riders who experienced stronger than expected braking force on the front wheel. Out of an abundance of caution, we are proactively removing the pedal-assist bikes from service for the time being," the company said in a blog post.

About 3,000 bikes will be pulled from service and will be replaced with regular bicycles. Altogether Lyft operates about 20,000 bikes in those three cities, with a mix of electric and regular models.
