That's certainly a romantic view of things.

Some of the information 'for the greater good of humanity' is nothing much more than celebrity-like gossip. And other released cables have already ruined the careers of a few people.

There's information released for which WikiLeaks deserves applause. But to quote Bernard Kouchner, the former foreign minister in France: “We will all terribly mistrust each other. That is the risk.”

A romantic view? No. Practical, yes. The alternative is the path we're on. Since no nation can realistically fight with us on conventional terms, they use any methods available to them, which we automatically label terrorist activity. This will result in an ever expanding war against a concept, terrorism, with anyone that doesn't support us named as an terrorist or enemy combatant. More bypassing of the Geneva convention and disregard for international law and more of what we call terrorism until it becomes another world war.

Yes, this is likely to ruin a few careers, most of them overseas politicians. That said, these exposed activities are already ruining the very lives of countless people, especially in the 3rd world. Most of the world already distrusts Americans in general. A large percentage of it outright hates us and the average American has no idea why. We're told they're jealous of our freedoms and wealth but the real reasons are shameful, and are now being exposed. Which is preferable, additional distrust between the representatives of the different nations (like they actually trust each other now) or the continuing and expanding of this global distrust and hatred? If the American people stood up and held and held their government responsible for their actions, that would change world opinion about us and do more to stop terrorism than any post 9/11 policy or covert activity the government could conjure up.

The way I see it, the world (including us) have 2 choices.
1, We can stay on the path we're on, constantly surrendering the very concepts we claim to be defending in others while taking it away from them. We can go bankrupt trying to detect and prevent every possible retaliation against us (terrorism) with our own people being collateral damage every time they move the wrong way or say something the powers that be don't like. Eventually, we'd lose this war because we don't have the manpower to continously fight the rest of the world. We can ignore what we see and watch civilization slowly be destroyed around us.

2, We can try acting civilized instead of just talking about it. We could try doing what we say and try living by the values we claim to want to spread. Our present course is not sustainable.

I'm not sure there are just two black or white alternatives here (continue doing 'evil', or do 'good') described in the political point of view in your post. The situation is more complex than that. But since we're supposed to emphasize privacy here not politics, I'll leave it at that for now.

The lengths that the genocidists and murderers will go to to gain power and control knows no bounds. 1000000 iraqis murdered 90% of which were civilians.
John Pilger supports Julian Assange and exposes the genocidist murderers in "The War You Don't See"

The WikiLeaks strategy:Bank of America buys up abusive domain names:

"Bank of America has snapped up hundreds of abusive domain names for its senior executives and board members in what is being perceived as a defensive strategy against the future publication of damaging insider info from whistleblowing Website WikiLeaks.

According to Domain Name Wire, the US bank has been aggressively registering domain names including its board of Directors' and senior executives' names followed by "sucks" and "blows".

For example, the company registered a number of domains for CEO Brian Moynihan: BrianMoynihanBlows.com, BrianMoynihanSucks.com, BrianTMoynihanBlows.com, and BrianTMoynihanSucks.com."

WTF? OMG, LOL! CIA gives WikiLeaks taskforce naughty name

US spy agency forms taskforce to assess fallout from 250,000 leaked US cables

The CIA has launched a taskforce to assess the impact of 250,000 leaked US diplomatic cables. Its name? WikiLeaks Task Force, or WTF for short.

The group will be charged with scouring the released documents to survey damage caused by the disclosures. One of the most embarrassing revelations was that the US state department had drawn up a list of information it would like on key UN figures – it later emerged the CIA had asked for the information.

"Officially, the panel is called the WikiLeaks Task Force. But at CIA headquarters, it's mainly known by its all-too-apt acronym: WTF," the Washington Post reported

And the November 28th DoS attack on Wikileaks? Will that warrant an investigation? Probably not. It is difficult to imagine that such an attack occurred without the support of the U.S. government.
