    It's very easy:

    1. Maintain the default/recommended configurations of everything in Win7 - including Report Problems, Microsoft Update, Windows Firewall and IE8's SmartScreen filter all being on, for example;

    2. Install MSE from here and, after installation, do some tweaks to its settings:
    - Turn the Scan Type to Full scan in Scheduled scan tab;
    - Check Scan removable drives in Advanced tab;
    - Change to Advanced Membership in Microsoft SpyNet tab.

    3. Make sure that every piece of software that you install is updated and will be maintained updated. You may find Secunia PSI available here to be useful for this task.

    I havent had a single performance issue yet. No lag, no unresponsive programs and Ive got quite a bit installed already.

    I use mostly portable applications. Portable Firefox/Thunderbird with Sandboxie and Hitman Pro. Very light and very secure. You may have to add a couple of extra folders for direct access in sandboxie for the portable ff/tb.
