So if you delete or wipe a file, the remnants can shift to a different area? What if you create a TrueCrypt volume on your USB stick for sensitive files? I would assume that by wiping a file within a TrueCrypt there would be no chance of it moving outside of the volume. And if the volume was deleted, there would be nothing recognizable left. Is this coorect?

Oh well I guess that answers my question about using a TrueCrypt volume.

Would deleting what is left with Restoration work?

Yes, absolutely. Just like with WinHex, if you can see the file (or remnants thereof) you can manually delete it using restoration or anything else that can purge in that way.

Gerard, could you (or anybody else here) explain the way to do it, please?

Or, at least, could you point me to some good tutorial on the subject?

SafetyFirst, if your goal is to erase a file on a USB flash memory device, then you should delete the file and then run any utility (e.g., Privacy Suite by CyberScrub) that will erase the free space on that volume. That’s the most simple and the most secure approach.

My goal is to sanitize my HD. I found filenames that belong to erased files still hanging around. I want to get rid of them. I want to make sure all traces of erased files are gone for good.

However, talking about erasing memory sticks (and hard drives), you might find this article interesting:

Have you tested Privacy Suite 5.0 by CyberScrub? It has the capability to erase file name information for previously deleted files, as part of an “erase free space” operation on either NTFS or FAT volumes; and destroys file names when erasing existing files on NTFS volumes. As we discussed, to erase file name information on a FAT volume, it is necessary to delete the file and then erase file name information as part of an “erase free space” operation.

Other tools may have similar functionality.

How have you setup sandboxie so that it uses eraser when deleting the contents of the sandbox?

If you check the link I provided in the post above you will see that CyberScrub leaves traces behind (although the tested version is not the newest one).

Googling around, I 've found that even the infamous Dr Who has come to the same conclusion like me. He says:

"In previous versions I have suggested work-arounds to help minimize the inherent security weaknesses within the Windows operating system.

I have now concluded this is a sheer waste of time. Whatever you do, Windows will tell the world. It keeps records of so much of your activity it seems the only solution is the complete encryption of your whole drive. Even using so-called washing programs, little is to be gained. If security is important to you, there is only one solution: encrypt your whole drive.

This is so important, I will repeat it: If security is important to you, there is only one solution: encrypt your whole drive.

A program I recommend to test this out for yourself is WinHex. It reads your drive and shows both the hexadecimal and the text equivalent of each sector. It makes fascinating reading. You will see snippets of long deleted or the ends of overwritten files, perhaps from the Windows swapfile. Hints of text that will ensure any snooper could accurately deduce your computer habits. In fact the program is so successful at this, it is also sold as a forensic tool for disk analysis."

Okay well it seemed to work with one of my USB sticks, but the Scandisk brand still shows fragments after running Restoration. It is all just a bunch of symbols and stuff, but it still shows, whereas the other USB shows clean. But I guess as long as you cannot read any of it, it's okay. Or is it?

I will try that one when I get home (I'm out of town). But I can tell you that both R-Wipe and Eraser renamed everything according to Restoration. And I don't know about Eraser, but R-Wipe get's rid of swap files.

Yes, SafetyFirst, I did previously look at the link you posted, and noted the comments about CyberScrub. However, that was version 3.5 – which is about four years out-of-date. The current version is 5.0.

The use of full disk encryption (FDE) eliminates the need to worry about erasing files, because all file traces are – by definition – encrypted. However, as implemented in software (e.g., Securedoc by WinMagic or PGP WDE) this technique has it disadvantages, too: most notably the difficulties and complications that arise in using an image backup application (e.g., ShadowProtect Desktop by StorageCraft or Norton Ghost by Symantec). Additionally, based on my own experience, FDE slows down disk access a bit, making the system slightly less responsive.

Note that Seagate has incorporated FDE into some of its hard disk drives. In my opinion, this is ultimately the direction that encryption will eventually take: namely, it will be integrated into the disk drive hardware itself, thereby eliminating any application or operating system conflicts.

Please see Introduction to Full Disk Encryption for additional information.

Although the command can change depending on what program you're going to be using, it's not very hard to set up Sandboxie to erase. Just follow the screenshot below, which is found under "Sandbox Settings." I use Eraser so essentially it's just:

Yes, I have now bought and tried CyberScrub Privacy Suite 5.0. It looks like a nice app. Still, it doesn't solve my problem. After having it run with maximum security settings (Gutmann, with everything ticked - wipe free space, wipe slack, scramble files properties etc.) nothing changed. WinHex and Disk Investigator still find those filenames. Please, try it yourself, Disk Investigator is freeware.

In my quest to ultimate privacy I even wanted to buy the controversial Evidence Eliminator, but, for some bizarre reason that is beyond my comprehension, I couldn't register it. I paid for it, received the registration keys, but I just couldn't type them (or copy and paste them) into the registration fields which don't accept anything. I click on the registration field, the cursor is blinking, but no matter what I type nothing shows up. Re-installation didn't help. Now I am requesting my money back.

Has anyone encountered such a problem with any software? If yes, how to solve it?

    Is that still around?
There is NO controversy re EE
    :gack: :gack: :gack:
May or may not do what it is claiming: doesn't matter: imho a rogue app with such tainted prior biz practices.. :gack: :gack: :gack:

some of that info may be ood but a great read nonetheless and truth still resonates even in our current elastic definitions ;)

    Lucky you.
    Good idea, Good Luck.

Not possible ..as you see..you have a bank account.. you have a credit card..you have a SS number..you are enrolled in a tertiary institution..you have a job, pay tax..you have a drivers license..you are on a voters roll..you use e-mail..you are on the web..you have left traces..ALL OVER THE CLOUD.
Is winhex really able to retrieve functional file/data info after your wipes?
I may have missed this, but, Have you used winhex itself to try and achieve what you want?
    Why don't you believe Gutmann?

Use a live CD: keep your files on disposable CD's, locked up, regular churn...

Filenames of some files that were erased long time ago (and free space wiped many times since) are still there. Uninstalled software (using Total Uninstall) is still there with all program files, temp folders etc.

I've used WinHex itself to overwrite free space with 3-pass CSPRNG, but after that it still retrieves those filenames. They must be stored somewhere in some Windows-locked place.

SafetyFirst - Just one quick question - before you do your "erasing/wiping" runs, are you shutting down absolutely all un-necessary running programs?

FI, before I do my daily Eraser run, I exit everything in SYSTRAY that will close and then I do a C/A/D and shut down all un-needed running processes.

    Do you do that? Pete

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Two days ago I closed all running programs and ran CyberScrub Privacy Suite 35 passes free space wipe on partitions C and E. It needed six and half hours to wipe the free space, slack and to scramble files properties (MFT and $LogFile erasing included). After that, I can still get the filenames of erased files.

    What is C/A/D?

I guess I'll have to check with WinHex (assuming I ever get time), but Restoration (among others) has never found anything but "0"'d files/filenames after a simple 3-pass run with Eraser.

All Eraser ever misses is this stuff, which looks innocuous enough:

IMHO that is what should matter more than anything...

We all agree their marketing is disgusting (especially those splash screens with "You are a sitting duck" warning or "This screen will make you wait ten seconds - that's nothing compared to ten years..." showing a picture of a man in prison), but that doesn't necessarily mean that the program is not good in doing its job.

People usually criticize their advertising tactics without saying anything about the quality of the program itself.

I always try to get some information from independent sources, that's why I'll repost that link here again:

    www.berghel.net/col-edit/digital_village/aug-06/dv_8-06.php

I also found many other experts saying that EE is the most thorough cleaner. That's why I wanted to test it despite their repulsive marketing.

I tried and I still use many other cleaners: Eraser, CCleaner, CleanCache, Window Washer, Clean Disk Security, BCWipe, Sweepi, CyberScrub... I can't remember now of all of them, so why not try EE? I bought WinHex mostly for wiping, more than anything else.

Why all these programs fail to deliver I am still trying to find out.

I am afraid you might be right. I know a guy who works in computer forensics for the Dallas Police and he says EE is definitely the best of the lot but that anybody who has a program with that name (Evidence Eliminator) on their PC is already down one with the police/prosecutor/judge/jury. He has a point.

That aside, I cannot stand Robin Hood Software and woudn't use it if it was GIVEN to me.
