Nice, Ocky. I'm reinstalling SL6 just to try the compiz stuff (with fusion-icon :)) and your priorities list. Way to go, dude.

Yes, I've been over to the dark-side (Win 7) but I'm back now. :p.

    Later...

Back then I acted on your advice to try CentOS for the desktop. To refresh your memory here the thread ..https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=227393&highlight=centos
Your post #11 was the clincher. :)

Re: my post #52 above - priorities.
As someone on the SL forum pointed out to me, it would add more flexibility to number the priorities 20, 30 etc. Reason being that if I had say rpmforge at 20 (previously 2), I could for instance prefer rpmforge over bitdefender (previously also 2) by changing bitdefender to 21.
This would still keep bitdefender before atrpms in the example I posted in #52.

Scientific Linux 6 - Another great distro, but

The moment you have all waited for; or at least, some of you, maybe. I've written a long, thorough review of Scientific Linux 6, including live session, installation of CD and DVD editions in dual-boot configuration and on external disk, post-install usage, Wireless, Bluetooth, Samba sharing, programs, multimedia - missing plugins search, MP3 playback, Flash, Compiz effects, graphics drivers, package management, extra repositories, suspend & resume, printing, some problems, and more. Could this be my next desktop?

    Cheers,

Sorry you were a bit disappointed, nothing a cuppa or two of coffee and a few hours can't sort out.
Apple Trailers. I am not in front of SL6 right now but if I remember correctly what I did was to install gnome media player which also installs the gecko media player plugin. then you can watch the trailers. http://www.imagebam.com/image/7a949d128723878

I think I installed VLC from atrpms - it's the latest version and I have not had any problems whatsoever.

PS. I know that your reviews of this nature are to put yourself in the shoes of a new linux user and how easy it is to get satisfaction out of the box - so from that point of view I agree with you.

Many thanks for taking the time to review SL6. It's on my shortlist as future main working distro.

    Mrk,
I had the very same problem with VLC every once in a while. Strange, one install VLC would work fine. Another install VLC would segfault. Which repo did you use to acquire VLC? Atrpms? I didn't seem to have as much trouble with RPMForge. Also, the SL6 DVD release has gconf-editor while the Live-CD did not. Over all I think your review was fair in its assessment. I happen to like SL6 very, very much.

Side note. I think Ocky will jump ship to CentOS once it is released. Just call it a hunch. :). He's just playing around with SL6 because its available.

    yes

wish there is only one like RPM Fusion of fedora which itself is a merger of Dribble, Freshrpms, and Livna

wish something like that they create for SL as well so none or very little priority or package issues

    mrk again great review :thumb:

your Conclusion say itself every thing :))

VLC bug, apple site not playing and installation onto an external device
yes we need some tweaking but with tweaking hope things short out thanks to ocky for putting light on correcting 2 out of 3 it would be kind and helpful for other users as well if you put some light on VLC with Atrpms and apple site problem if they corrected it would be helpful for other users as well who migrating or thinking to switch to SL

my point is not making 90% to 100% distro but if 7 % more short out with tweak would be helpful to other as well if they face same problem

    Update>>

This version by 'killobyte' is great - not buggy. So if you had some rendering problems with the version mentioned in my above post, try this one. http://www.killobyte.com/openshot/

Note: When you first start the new version you will need to go to preferences and change "Melt Command Name" to "mlt-melt" to solve the problem of 'no codecs or formats found' message on start up the first time. Just install over the previous version.

OpenAFS is the "open" implementation of the Andrew's file system, similar to NFS. I could not possibly think of any one reason why a home user would ever want to run something like that.

    Mack_ Guy,
Go here to get LibreOffice (no repo that I'm aware of)...

    http://www.libreoffice.org/download/

    version 3.4.1 is available.

For VLC I've always had better luck using rpmforge for the install. Atrpms and rpmforge don't seem to mix to well so make sure atrpms is disabled or prioritized when installing VLC.

I always uninstall OpenAFS since we really don't need it.

    Later...

    Mack_Guy,
The rpms for the install of LibreOffice are inside of that tar.gz file. Just thought I'd point that out to you.

    Looking like Fedora?! :gack: ....;).
