Samsung unveils the next chip for mid-range Galaxy phones on November 12th

SamMobile reports that Samsung’s Chinese branch has teased a launch event for its Exynos 1080 chipset on November 12th in Shanghai. There’s precious little info in the teaser regarding the chip besides its built-in 5G (already present in the 980), but Samsung has already dropped a few clues as to what to expect.

The company recently revealed to Android Authority that the Exynos 1080 will be a direct successor to the 980 that uses newer Cortex-A78 CPU cores and Mali-G78 graphics. In other words, this isn’t meant for flagships like the Galaxy S — instead, it’ll improve the performance for mid-range phones like the Galaxy A series.

One early test result suggested the 1080 might be faster than the Snapdragon 865.

This might be Samsung’s most important chip for the coming year.

SamMobile: Samsung Exynos 1080 chipset will be unveiled on November 12

The company has now confirmed when it’s going to unveil the Exynos 1080 chipset.

Samsung has confirmed through its official Weibo account that it’s going to make the Exynos 1080 official on November 12. This press conference is going to be held in Shanghai, China. That’s when we’ll finally know all of the technical details. Samsung may not immediately confirm which devices will use it. That information should become available in due course.

Samsung's Exynos 1080 is its first five-nanometer chip
The chip will debut in a Vivo phone at some point in the future

The company has announced its first five-nanometer SoC, the Exynos 1080, which will likely feature in a number of handsets through 2021. Co-developed with Vivo, the big new feature is the addition of an mmWave 5G modem designed to support the bands used in mainland China.

Engadget China reports that the chip will actually debut on an as-yet unnamed Vivo handset due at some point in the future. Specs-wise, the unit packs an eight-core chip running a single-core, 2.8GHz A78, paired with three more A78 cores clocked at 2.2GHz. On the other half of the chip, you’ll find a quad-core A55 running at 2.0GHz and a Mali G78 GPU which will support QHD displays up to 90Hz.

Samsung’s production of a 5nm chip means that TSMC no longer holds the monopoly on the process, and hopefully we’ll see more efficient chips from all phone makers in future. After all, the smaller your transistors, the faster, or more power-efficient your phone becomes.

After acknowledging the presence of the Exynos 1080 chipset last month, Samsung fully unveiled it today during an event in China. The new premium mid-range smartphone processor from the company has all the modern features one could think of, and it will debut inside a Vivo smartphone.
The Exynos 1080 is built using Samsung’s 5nm EUV process, so it is extremely power-efficient.
