Samsung is joining the likes of Google and Apple in including a chip specifically for security on its devices. The Galaxy S20 series comes with a Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 5+ certified Secure Element which comprises of the S3K250AF security chip and software optimized for it. This is the highest level of certification for a mobile component.

The Secure Element on the Galaxy S20 series works in the same manner as it does on the likes of the iPhones and Pixels. It has a separate memory for storing private and confidential information like passwords, PINs, crypto-currency credentials, and more.

The Secure Element will fend off reverse engineering attempts, power glitches, laser attacks, and more in a bid to protect sensitive data stored on your Galaxy S20. The chip is already in mass production and should also be found in future flagship Samsung devices.

Samsung prides itself on offering various security features with its smartphone products such as Samsung Knox for data isolation, Secure Wi-Fi for safe browsing via public networks, and Find My Mobile for remote blocking of a device in case of theft. In addition, its Galaxy S20 lineup comes with a secure chip, part of the Knox platform, that shields user data from advanced hardware attacks.

Today, the company detailed the method by which its Secure Element chip works to fend off various types of attacks on the hardware level.
The chip also detects irregular voltage or temperature changes, which could signal malicious attempts by attackers to tamper with device hardware. Additionally, the processor has security algorithms designed to stop side-channel attacks.

Samsung Electronics today introduced a standalone turnkey security solution comprised of a Secure Element (SE) chip (S3FV9RR) and security software that offers protection for tasks such as booting, isolated storage, mobile payment and other applications.

The latest security chip is Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level (CC EAL) 6+ certified, the highest level acquired by a mobile component.
The standalone security element solution (S3FV9RR) follows the first-generation solution (S3K250AF) announced in February. The new component offers higher assurance levels than its predecessor’s CC EAL 5+ with an CC EAL 6+ certified-hardware secure element, and powerful security software.

As a standalone solution, the chip can work independently from the security performance of the device’s main processor. This makes it versatile, expanding the security capabilities of mobile devices, IoT applications, and other devices in all performance levels.
Samsung’s S3FV9RR is expected to be available within the third quarter of this year.
