We first heard last month that Samsung’s rumored new foldable, possibly called the Galaxy Z Flip, will apparently fold clamshell-style similar to Motorola’s upcoming Razr and might have a glass screen. Today, leaker Max Weinbach of XDA Developers shared a few more rumors about that glass screen on Twitter.

According to Weinbach, the phone’s OLED screen will use a type of glass that Samsung may call “Samsung Ultra Thin Glass.”
Weinbach also says that the upcoming foldable will have a crease in the middle — which you can see in the image at the top of this post, taken from apparent leaked images of the phone floating around Chinese social media.

If it’s true that Samsung’s new foldable has a glass screen, that would differentiate it from the Razr and Samsung’s first foldable, the Galaxy Fold, both of which have plastic screens. And perhaps this rumored glass screen is more durable than the unreliable plastic one that almost shipped on the Galaxy Fold before it was delayed and Samsung was forced to revamp the design.

You might not have to wonder what Samsung's clamshell foldable phone looks like -- if leaks are accurate, you're staring at it right now. WinFuture has obtained images and specs for what's believed to be the Galaxy Z Flip, and it looks like what you might have expected, with a few catches.

The device reportedly centers on a 6.7-inch, 2,636 x 1,080 folding display with more protective "Ultra Thin Glass" instead of plastic and a hole for the 10-megapixel front camera. On the back, you'd have a 1-inch always-on secondary display that shows the time and notifications when your phone is shut.
The Z Flip would run on a slightly older Snapdragon 855 Plus processor with 8GB of RAM instead of the 865 expected in the Galaxy S20 family.

The Z Flip will supposedly launch quickly, arriving as soon as February 14th. It's not certain that it'll cost €1,500 as WinFuture suggests, but we wouldn't count on it being cheap given the display tech.

Feast your eyes, folks. The first hands-on video of the Galaxy Z Flip just leaked.

The video was published by Ben Geskin on Twitter, without any additional information or details on the source of the leak. That said, the video seems very credible, and this close to the official launch of the device we’re positive it’s legit.

The 19-second clip shows the Galaxy Z Flip in the aptly-titled Mirror Purple color version, from all angles.
We can also see some gaps near the hinges of the Galaxy Z Flip. On Motorola’s Razr “flip-phone” these gaps allow the ingress of debris, potentially causing small bumps in the screen (which Motorola calls normal). It remains to be seen whether Samsung was able to work around this issue.

While the phone was completely different from Galaxy Fold, it still didn’t survive the JerryRigEverything’s durability test. Not only that, but he also pointed out that Samsung is not using glass and the Galaxy Z Flip was either plastic or some sort of hybrid material.

While the use of glass on Z Flip is still debatable, Samsung has found itself in hot waters again as early adopters are reporting problems with the device. A couple of users who received the Galaxy Z Flip are reporting problems with the hinge and the display. [...]
Similar to what happened with Galaxy Fold, it looks like Samsung had installed a protective layer on Galaxy Z Flip but forgot to inform customers that they are not supposed to remove that layer.

While these incidents are isolated at the moment, this is how the Galaxy Fold debacle started. We don’t have any information from Samsung yet.

It is notable that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip does have a protective polymer layer on top of its UTG, but then it is also clear that the UTG + Polymer combination does not provide significant protection against scratches or punctures.

Now, this isn't a post about singling out Samsung in particular—they're merely on the cutting edge of what is a larger and growing trend.

You can buy smartphones today for under $200 that would run circles around those that cost $700 five years ago, a result both of commoditization and innovation. We all understand these sort of things almost unthinkingly, because that's just how technology works.
But in the past two or three years in particular, we've watched smartphone prices climb at a fairly unprecedented rate.

But as consumers choose to upgrade their phones less and less frequently (a trend for which there is ample data), manufacturers continue to raise prices in order to reap back the profits of what was once a reliable 2-year replacement cycle.

While the high end of the market has always significantly outpriced the entry level, the proportion by which that is true has skyrocketed.
What was once a factor of maybe two or three between a respectable mid-range value phone and a "flagship" is now five or six.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 is looking like a fairly exciting device, and apparently it’s also going to be coming with a new name. According to SamMobile, the Galaxy Fold 2 is actually going to adopt the company’s “Z” branding scheme.

The original Samsung Galaxy Fold followed the company’s traditional smartphone branding scheme, but the next foldable changed that. The “Galaxy Z Flip” laid the foundation for a new series of smartphones that fold, and now it seems that branding will extend over to the larger Fold.
Samsung’s next foldable smartphone will apparently be called the “Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.”
