    I thought most countries already had these kinds of laws?

    AFAIK most of them only want telecom companies to store metadata and not all content of communications ( actual texts, calls...).

    But is that what's happening or is it a poorly written article? As Beyonder already said, this 100% already happens in virtually every country (metadata).

    Russia will require the storage of everything; not just metadata. They also can force the storage source provider to decrypt anything encrypted.

    Even if it is technologically impossible (strong crypto, perfect forward secrecy etc)... Are they crazy?

    IDK, that's how I read the article (storing everything, not just metadata). AFAIK providers can intercept SMS and calls, but they can't decrypt encrypted data that is transferred through their network.
