If I have read this correctly, you are also saying that when you are in a regular folder and you click File on the toolbar, nothing happens?

Just trying to cast straws in the wind here but would posting a Hijack This Scan maybe show up some of the places that this FD trash is hiding?

    For the folders:
For instance i have a folder My documents on my desktop for this occasion. Opening it, no problem,
in it several folders. Rightclick on a folder, no reaction.
although the first time the few seconds waiting with the sand timer, if i try it after that a second time no matter on whihc folder immediately no reaction.
I can select a folder and after click the "file" button on top in the folder window, nothing happens, only if i click on the selected folder again i have the option to change it's name, as i see the little window around it and can type in it.
If i would click the File on top before selecting a folder in it however, the button behaves normal and the file menu under that button unforlds normally with the several menu options.

If i open windows explorer, go to my documents from there in the left folder pane no reactions, in the right pane almost the same behavior, with the exception of after closing the possible renamed folder i get an IE crash like described before.

    Selecting (rightclick) the drives:
in the leftpane on the drives on this computer no reaction like with the folders and in the right pane since uninstalling those Fresh Devices programs i can rightclick on the partitions/drives on this system again, (was absolutely impossible with the FD stuff installed)
The drives on the other system via the network i can rightclick on in both panes.
Of course my first try was to look at rightclicking the folders and exefiles and linkfiles via the network, not possible, only the drives.

Of course now my next exercise ....
from the other system not any problem to rightclick on the files and folders, links and exefiles not on that system itself nor via the network on this system.
That one is a windows ME system, so not all the same everywhere ... (thinking of comparing registry) not the same programs installed there either unfortionally, just a few. On that never the freshdevices were installed and it doesn't connect to internet either.

In my opinion the best course of action at this point would be to have someone install the same program you did. And on 98SE. Not on 2k or XP. But monitoring the install with a utility and for insurance first creating a registry backup, to see exactly what changes were made. Then you would have a list to compare against. And it would be even better if that person ran a Dutch language version of Windows.

You do have a lot of shell extensions installed. However at this point you are going in circles. And those shell extensions were there before the problem started.

Uninstall anything you don't use. But if this happened after installing one certain program , then that program is where I would concentrate attention. Do you know anyone willing to track an install and create a report for you?

Way back in this thread, TWEAKUI was mentioned. I can't remember. Did you install it and repair File Associations? If not you should follow that advice too.

You might even consider extracting new copies of explorer.exe and shell32.dll from your install cd using SFC. I doubt they are the problem, but it can't hurt.

At any rate, a map of what this program does would be very helpful.

All the advices in this thread are tried, including the TWEAKUI
Things started with installing Fresh Devices, all the four parts, Fresh View, Gresh UI, Fresh Diagnose, Fresh Download
Conchise and a few others used Fresh Download as well and got rid of it finally; i did hope Conchise and/or others who were able to get rid of that finally from their registry would remember what more to look for, as i found FView associations which i all deleted, FreshDevices, but i don't see anything i recognise as belonging to FreshDownload as i uninstalled it and looked for hundreds of "FD" things which i could not recognise where they come from.

At the moment am looking into this page too

    Hi Jooske,

I know those tweaks. I was a registry specialist on the 98 OS forums long before I ever heard of Spyware.
You have a lot on your context menus. Uninstall anything you no longer use as a matter of housekeeping.

And it would be perfect if we had a map of all changes made by the programs you installed and then found caused these problems. We could track and see if they are all removed.

Also, an exported key does look different from how it looks when you open the registry and read directly. I think you had a question about that earlier.

I know this is after the fact and very frustrating. At this point you are running around in circles. Something is preventing your context menus from behaving like they should.

But what? Remove anything having to do with those programs. Any leftovers.

Extract new copies of explorer.exe to Windows and shell32.dll to System using sfc.

One more very very very long shot. I am not sure this is even pertinent.

Go into the registry and delete these two keys:

    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\StreamMRU

    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams

They will be recreated fresh .

    Reboot.

(Be sure to backup before you make any changes. )

One more quickie. You don't have a dll sitting on the desktop by any chance, do you? If so. put it in a folder.

    Thank you!

    rjhextensions thing on the loose.
I uninstalled it and all is fine!
All rightclick menus unfold nicely again on exe, folder, lnk
    Is't that great?
Now i'm certainly going to look more in the things you mentioned!
That you are a registry specialist is known all over internet, fortunately as i've seen you helping out people more often.
This is really great, and gives courage to look for more uninstallation of things i don't use indeed, even if they just sit there maybe without doing anything.
Found Reghancer (lavasoft) on my system, which i never used as i don't know how exactly.

The exported files do look different then in the registry indeed, the oreer of things etc and i walked for instance through that ROOT\directory key together with the one on the windows ME where is really very little installed and there were but a few differences.
That value "ICQMenu" for instance surprises me in that place which seems so very central, and that very long hexe thing etc etc, further they are identical,
so i thought i had to look in other parts.

Maybe the rjhextensions thing which was there very long time got corrupted with the fresh devices stuff, never know; the problems started with that install so looks like it.
Anyway i'm really grateful for al the help and all your extra explanations and advices, as i see i have still lots to clean out. Even getting the feling the system is reacting faster again, but that is probably imagination.

Thank you again, so very much for not losing the courage on my system!
    Big karma cookie from me!

    Jooske,

You're welcome. I am very happy to hear it. You provided the clue when you mentioned the error way back there. The last suggestions I made were the kitchen sink of desperation in the event nothing else worked.

Uninstalling extras doesn't hurt. I agree, it's a good idea.

Reghancer is an alternative to using regedit. As I recall it has a few nice extra features which regedit doesn't. I think it even allows you to create shortcuts to keys. It is nice not having to drill down every time you want to access a favorite key.

Some values are exported in Hex and can be confusing. But must be left in that condition.

    Thank you for the cookie.

PM me anytime you need registry help. I am rusty, but will give it a go. I miss it.

Speaking of which, here's my copy and paste advice regarding a really nice Registry Search tool. It is a vbs, and exports all keys it finds as a result. It has been very helpful on the Forums.

As for a search of the registry here's a very nice script to help you out.

Download it and run it. When it starts, you will be prompted to enter a search phrase. Do that and go have a cup of coffee.
When you get back, a message box will be there on the desktop.Say yes to open the results. Copy and paste the contents into a reply here. Once you close that file, it will be deleted, so please save it as results.txt. We may need it again.

    Here's that link:

Find Registry Search Tool And download it.

Not that this is of any use to you whatsoever Jooske but just to make a point. I have unsubscribed from FreshDevices spamming three times....this came to-day in my mail from them......

    Release of Fresh UI 7.o2.
    How to Draw.
    Get paid for my Opinions.
    Giveaways for over 55s.
    DVD Suite v 5.0
    People Investigator and Finder.
    New: TV Wall Giant Screen.
    Stock Trading Wizard.

They just don't let go. This is the third spam mail from them in three weeks.

    Cochise,

So you're on their weekly spamlist

So am i, good to make some noise and warnings for other people, put them on your blocklist, in the hosts file, in the super restricted zone and coockies wiped immediately if they would get near your sytem less then 100 meters, etc etc. Highly infected stuff brbrb
I remember to have seen in one of the spams mailwasher and that kind of antispam.
You could of course send a very difficult question to their support and tell them you successfully uninstalled all their software till that problem is solved. A technical description about "how do i get rid of you completely" f.e.
Maybe mentioning a thread in the wilders top security forum where tips are given what was all tried and what to look for, some additions and the "should i try..?" thread together with this one will do .. it seems as i did not see my weekly dose of their spam yet, but that might be a timezone thing.

This moment i'm really doing other urgent things here, i come back on Mosaic1's registry test parts later.
So much work stayed undone with me giving so much energy in trying to get my system unfolding its secrets!

    Hey Jooske

Someone already mentioned this, but not sure if you actually looked into it...

Is there "NoViewContextMenu" string in the following location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    ?

    Hi Phant0m``,
that string was nowhere in my registry, thought i posted that?
Good that you remind to make that part clear for other users who ever (hope not!) have this kind of problems to look at too!
Had a few other strings tehre, not this one.

It was the rjhextensions program got corrupted with installing the FreshDevices --not sure which of the four of those caused it, but i was unable to detect or repair it with those programs, and after uninstalling rjh was still corrupt. After uninstalling that all was fine again and the system seems lots faster too!
For instance i had a weird problem in windows explorer those last few weeks with that software still installed:
after deleting a file or folder from the right pane in windows explorer it took lots of time to be able to use that screen again and all those other files and folders had finally decided to fill the empty space and i could do next steps like cleaning the recycle bin, it even crashed several times on that, all that kind of things.
Uninstalling the FreshDevices didn't solve that part, but since removing the corrupted rjh it is as it should be normal, quick. And this i notice in many more areas, so i'm more happy cleaning up old stuff and even had the courage to create a HJT log (where Pieter didn't see anything urgent too) so it's getting back into a normal system step by step.

It was the first time in my posting here (first page of this thread) that the rjh ...... error showed up, all other times unknown files, pages, kerner32.dll crashes, etc etc so lucky this one showed up and seems to have been the cause.
Of course i thought of infections and kept searching and scanning, and of course in my cleaning up i'm still looking around with a more criticle eye.
For instance in this location you sent me to look for Microsoft i see also a Microsof so i have to try to find out what this is or was, not recognising it yet, that kind of things can keep a person very busy :)

This probably wont work but there is no harm in trying this out, create the string using 1 for it enabled and re-boot the PC, afterwards modify by using 0 to disable and re-boot...

    User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
    Explorer]
    System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
    Explorer]
    Value Name: NoViewContextMenu
    Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
    Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)
