On a Vista system I try to add a free part (70 GB) of a harddisk to an existing partition (150 GB) on this harddisk. The free part is in front of the existing partition.

The system is started two times with disk director working messages and than Vista is restarted.

On the harddisk nothing is changed. No error in the protocol.

Vista Ultimate, Disk Director 10 Build 2161

You'll have to do this operation from the Rescue CD. If you haven't already done so, create one using the Bootable Media Builder ("Tools" menu, "Bootable Media Builder").

Boot from the CD and run the Full version of Disk Director (DD). If you can't see your disk drive with the "full" version then try running the "safe" version. After DD starts, choose "Manual" mode.

Then repeat the resize operation. Right-click on your Vista partition and choose "Resize". Drag the left slider to the left to enlarge the partition and incorporate the 70 GB of free space to the left of the Vista partition.

When you are done you will find out that Vista will not boot because you just moved the starting sector of the Vista partition. To fix this you will need to boot from the Vista DVD and run a repair operation, then Vista should boot again.

It is advisable to make a full backup before doing this so that you can recover if something goes wrong. If you have TrueImage, back up the entire disk. If not, use Vista's full backup feature. Better safe than sorry.
