Researchers reach unseen data transmission speeds by tweaking fiber optics

Researchers from University College London (UCL) in partnership with experts from KDDI Research and Xtera have set a new data transmission rate world record.

Working together, the team was able to achieve a data transmission rate of 178 terabits a second, or 178,000,000 megabits a second. According to UCL’s press release, that’s fast enough to download Netflix’s entire catalog in less than a second.
It is a fifth faster than the previous record set by a team in Japan.

The feat took place in a UCL lab where the researchers utilized a much wider range of wavelengths compared to what is typically used in optical fiber (spectrum bandwidth of 16.8THz versus 4.5THz).

UCL: UCL engineers set new world record internet speed

At this speed, it would take less than an hour to download the data that made up the world’s first image of a black hole (which, because of its size, had to be stored on half a ton of hard drives and transported by plane).

Lead author Dr Galdino, a Lecturer at UCL and a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow, said: “While current state-of-the-art cloud data-centre interconnections are capable of transporting up to 35 terabits a second, we are working with new technologies that utilise more efficiently the existing infrastructure, making better use of optical fibre bandwidth and enabling a world record transmission rate of 178 terabits a second.”

It's cool, but the question is do home users really need this type of speed. The feature of TV is clearly on demand streaming, and 100Mbps is more than enough for this stuff.

Editor's take: A team of researchers from the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NICT) in Japan have blown the old Internet speed record of 178 terabits a second out of the water. The new record? An eye-watering 319 terabits per second. It took some ingenuity and tweaking to get it working, but the good news is that the new fiber optics are compatible with existing equipment, meaning it might not be too difficult to retrofit existing lines.

To achieve this feat, the researchers (led by led by Benjamin J. Puttnam) built a transmission system that fully utilizes wavelength division multiplexing technology by combining different amplifier tech.
Their four-core optical fiber (with a standard outer diameter of 0.125 mm) stretched 69.8 km and was looped 43 times for a final transmission distance of 3,001 km, or roughly 1,865 miles.
