After peaking in 2016, the number of active hacktivist groups have since dipped precipitously, as has overall online chatter regarding hacktivism, according to a new report from researchers at Recorded Future. Furthermore, the researchers found a marked reduction in the frequency of large-scale international hacktivism campaigns.

Members of the company’s Insikt Group team theorize that this overall downward trend can be attributed in part to improved defensive postures thwarting hacktivist operations.

“The number of large enterprises susceptible to SQL injection attacks or DDoS floods have decreased, likely due to more mature website structures and the use of DDoS protection services…” the report states.
Insikt Group also noted a notable decline in references to hacktivism among underground forums, technical blogs, social media platforms, government bodies, mainstream news outlets, and analysts, among other possible sources.

High-Risk Behavior
While the days of high-risk technical hacks dominating headlines may be gone, the Twitter hijack and BlueLeaks show there are still hackers looking to access secure data — and their reasons remain varied.
Organizing groups to participate in social media actions is not prevented under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), the broad antihacking law that has been amended several times but not dramatically changed since it was passed in 1986.

Despite the threat of jail time in US federal prison, hacktivists are more willing than ever to risk their freedom for their causes, says Ken Pfeil, a longtime security expert and chief security architect at Tech Democracy, who is moderating an online panel on hacktivism on July 24.

Hacking is most often associated with the criminal behaviour of taking down websites or spreading malware for financial gain. However, some hackers are not in it just for the money. Due to the heightened sense of political awareness across society, some hackers have chosen to use their skills to take a stand by engaging in agenda-driven attacks.
What is hacktivism?
The term ‘hacktivism’ originated in the mid-90s, when it was first coined by Omega, a member of the retro hacking group Cult of the Dead Cow. However, it wasn’t until the 2010s that it truly gained notoriety.
Although the execution of hacktivist attacks has evolved over the years, the term has more or less remained the same.

Elsewhere, hacktivists have previously relied on data theft to expose sensitive files or records belonging to a target publicly over the internet - a method typically deployed to expose targets with something to hide, such as large corporations or governments.

Hacktivism is often controversial. While many decry the use of objectively illegal cyber attacks, no matter how noble the cause, many applaud vigilante hackers like Anonymous and others for taking the law into their own hands.
