In recent weeks, more information about the Surface Duo has trickled out as Microsoft lets developers prepare third-party apps. A new report today suggests that the Android Foldable might launch sooner than the previous holiday 2020 timeframe announced last October.

According to Windows Central, “Microsoft is hoping to launch Surface Duo much earlier than originally announced.” This is due to several factors, starting with the hardware being “pretty much done” and “ready to go for two years.”
Meanwhile, today’s report notes that all variants of the Surface Duo will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor — a staple of last year’s flagships.

An entry-level model will be powered by 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, with higher tiers available. That joins the dual 5.6-inch screens that combine for 8.3-inches of real estate.
On the software front, Android 10 is ready, with Microsoft now finalizing its “top-level OS customizations” to make sure the operating system runs smoothly on two displays, as well as first-party apps, presumably productivity services and its launcher.

Microsoft has remained tight-lipped regarding most details around its dual-screen Surface Duo smartphone. So far, we know that Surface Duo has two 5.6-inch displays at a resolution of 1800x1350 each. We also know those displays support Surface Pen, and that the device itself is 4.8mm thin, but that's about it. Microsoft is yet to detail the SoC, storage and RAM options, or talk about things such as the camera sensor.

According to my sources, Surface Duo will ship this year with a Snapdragon 855, 6GB RAM, and 64GB or 256GB storage options. It will feature a single 11MP camera sensor above the right display that will be used for both front and rear-facing photos and videos. The displays themselves are AMOLED panels with a pixel density of 401.
I'm also told that Surface Duo will ship with a 3460mAh battery, which, while not the biggest we've seen in a smartphone, is a comfortable size that should be able to get you through a day.

It's important to remember that Surface Duo isn't about raw specs; it's about form factor.
Most of the innovation coming out of Surface Duo is in the 360-degree hinge and dual-display setup, which I'm told is unlike any other dual-screen phone we've seen before. That said, Microsoft needs to launch this device as soon as possible, because its use of last year's processor, paired with the large bezels, and lack of NFC or wireless charging, means this device will age faster than others launching in the second half of this year.

Last October, Microsoft showed off the Surface Duo and Surface Neo, its first dual-screen smartphones. Back then Microsoft promised that both phones will be making their way to the market by the end of 2020.

However, earlier this year, it was reported that the Surface Neo has been delayed due to a couple of reasons, including the Windows 10X development running behind schedule and the coronavirus pandemic. That being said, the Redmond giant has fast-tracked the other dual-screen phone and may launch it in the coming weeks.

Foldable phones still aren’t very durable – at least according to some reviewers. As a viable alternative, Surface Duo was revealed by Microsoft as a dual-screen hinge-based device, back at the October event last year.

According to reports, Surface Duo will ship with Android 10 and the hardware is supposed to come with a single camera modular on the front panel.
Microsoft is also working on a bumper case to protect this unusual design and accommodate the flexibility of Surface Duo. According to my sources, the bumper case will be slim, lightweight, and manageable in size

Since this device is so new, there won’t many options available when Surface Duo launches in August, which is why the tech giant has created its own bumper case for the dual-screen hardware.

Microsoft’s Windows and hardware head Panos Panay has also shared a photo of the bumper case for Surface Duo on Twitter. This bumper case is likely to be something that Microsoft plans to sell on its website later this year.

This is Likely the Microsoft Surface Duo at the FCC

The Microsoft Surface Duo should be arriving here shortly, or maybe later this summer, if rumors are to be believed. I would tend to lean towards that happening if the device that just stopped through the FCC is what I think it is. There’s no guarantee because Microsoft tried their best to hide all identifying info, but it sure looks like the Surface Duo stopped through for all of its testing and certification glory.

Since this device isn’t a computer or laptop or notebook and is instead a “phablet” that has two screens, opens and closes, folds at varying angles, has cellular connectivity and NFC, what else could it be?

Microsoft’s first Android phone is the Surface Duo with two separate screens and it’s aimed at productivity work. Surface Duo was announced in October, and Microsoft is expected to release it later this month. If new certifications are to be believed, the Surface Duo will also launch outside the United States.

Surface Duo has already appeared in an FCC filing, Bluetooth SIG certifications, and UL LLC certifications (Canada). Now, the Surface Duo has appeared in Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, meaning there’s a good chance the dual-screen hardware won’t be exclusive to the US or Canada initially.
The certifications indicate that the dual-screen device will ship outside of the United States when it launches later this month. Surface Duo should also see a launch in Japan within the coming weeks or months.

Compared to the early units that Microsoft shared last October, the big difference in these renders from Evan Blass (@evleaks) is the inclusion of a flash in the top-right corner of the open Surface Duo. It’s identical to the real-world shots shared by various Microsoft employees in recent weeks.
Blass notes this is a leak of “Microsoft Surface Duo for AT&T.” That could be the carrier Microsoft is offering the Surface Duo on, and the origin. Otherwise, there is no carrier branding in today’s images.

Well-known leaker Evan Blass has shared (via Windows Central) a batch of renders for the Surface Duo while claiming the dual-screen Android device will launch with AT&T.
He didn’t provide release details or pricing, but it’s safe to say that monthly payments could make it easier to justify the unique clamshell device.

This means that you will be able to gain root access to the device, flash custom ROMs on it, mod it, play around with hidden features, and more. Microsoft, however, has not confirmed if unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty or not.

Surface Duo is a $1,399 dual-screen phone and it sits roughly in line with top-tier Android flagships released in 2019.
Not long after Microsoft unveiled the Snapdragon 855-based Surface Duo, we’ve now spotted a test revealing the benchmarks score of the Surface Duo. The first benchmarks of the Surface Duo appeared on the benchmarking tool Geekbench’s database and early benchmarks measure up to top Android phones.

iFixit Surface Duo teardown finds some unsurprising bad news

The Surface Duo is here and that can only mean one thing: iFixit has completed a teardown of it. Foldable devices like the Surface Duo have generally received pretty lousy repairability scores from the folks at iFixit, so can the Surface Duo be the device that finally turns it around? Unfortunately, the answer to that question is “no, it cannot.”

In fact, the Surface Duo seems like a very difficult device to repair, especially when it comes to common repairs like replacing the battery or swapping out the charging port.
Once all the hardware has been removed from the device, we get a closer look at the hinge. iFixit says that it’s a “pretty simple” design that’s similar to the hinge we’d see on a 360-degree laptop, but that it’s clear Microsoft spent a long time perfecting it nonetheless.

In the end, iFixit says that the Surface Duo is “refined simplicity” and even a “bold, impressive idea,” but that doesn’t mean it’ll be easy to repair.
Indeed, the Surface Duo gets a repairability score of just 2 out of 10, which it shares with other notable foldables including the original Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip, and the Huawei Mate Xs.

The fact that the USB-C port is soldered to the motherboard, the abundance of tri-point screws, and the fact that the OLED displays are easily damaged during disassembly didn’t help, either.

When Microsoft detailed its Surface Duo dual-screen smartphone back in August, it confirmed the rumors that there were two ways that you can buy it: as an unlocked device or as an AT&T-locked device. Both variants were sold by Best Buy and the Microsoft Store, while just the locked one was sold by AT&T.

Now, a listing has appeared on Verizon's website. The Verizon variant shouldn't be different from existing units, except for perhaps being locked to the carrier and including Verizon bloatware. The Surface Duo is not a 5G smartphone, so you don't have to worry about mmWave bands.

The price of the Surface Duo is $20 less than it is elsewhere at $1,379 and $1,479 for 128GB and 256GB of storage, respectively. Verizon doesn't seem to be pushing a payment plan at the moment, but it probably will since that's the main value proposition of buying a smartphone from a carrier. Surface Duo is still on track to launch outside the United States

Surface Duo was launched in August and Microsoft is finally planning to bring the Surface Duo to markets outside the United States early next year.

Surface Duo has already received certifications in Japan (Asia), UK (Europe), and Canada. However, Microsoft decided to push back the launch of its revolutionary device outside the United States until early 2021.
According to the sources familiar with the development, Surface Duo is still on track to launch in Europe and Microsoft is already in touch with mobile carriers in the United Kingdom.
