A forensic investigation at Denver’s Regis University confirmed Friday that the private college’s technology systems were attacked by a “malicious threat” likely from outside the country.

University officials declined to say whether the situation at Regis was a ransomeware attack, saying the matter is still under investigation.

“At Regis, IT security is a top priority and one we do not take lightly,” the statement read. “We are working prudently and urgently to restore email, phone and other vital technology as soon as possible. It will be restored in stages in a systematic, careful manner.”
The “external data security threat” prompted Regis to yank down its technology services — including its website and all phone lines, email services and online programs that students use to submit work and professors grade it.

The start of the new academic year can be a challenging time on any college campus, but the start of the fall term at Regis University was unlike any other.
Students arrived at the private university in Denver to find the institution's internet, email, phones and website shut down following the discovery of a cyberthreat last Thursday.

Regis is not the only university to suffer from a crippling cyberattack just before the start of the new academic year. The Stevens Institute of Technology reported on Aug. 10 that it was the victim of a “very severe and sophisticated” cyberattack.
He noted that colleges in particular face difficult security challenges. “I don’t think these criminals are particularly targeting colleges, but [colleges] do have a lot of computing power, a lot of openness in their networks and a lot of people accessing data. It’s surprising, actually, that you don’t hear about it more. They’re in a prime environment to be affected by these attacks.”

A week after cyberattack, Regis University makes some progress to restore normalcy

A week after a “malicious threat” likely from outside the country downed internet technology systems at Regis University, the community at the private, religious college can finally begin connecting to campus WiFi, but only on their personal devices.

While Regis students, staff and faculty can now connect their personal phones and laptops to campus WiFi, the university warns Regis-issued computers and devices cannot be connected at this time. Quarantine notices have been placed on Regis computers to remind people to keep away.
Some Regis students have reported receiving emails from the university’s online class platform called WorldClass, according to the makeshift communication website regisupdates.com.

“WARNING: These are very likely phishing attempts,” read the post on regisupdates.com. “WorldClass is NOT restored yet. It remains a top priority for restoration and we will notify students and faculty as soon as it is up.”
Since Thursday, progress to restore the IT system has been slow, but innovation to cope with the inconvenience has been aplenty.

When “malicious actors” carried out a cyberattack on Regis University last August — crippling the Denver campus’s IT network and downing phones, email and Wi-Fi — university officials paid the hackers a ransom in hopes of restoring their incapacitated systems.

Yet even after that payment, which Regis leaders publicly revealed for the first time to The Denver Post, the cyberattack still impaired day-to-day operations at the private Jesuit college for months.
Regis officials had not previously acknowledged the attack involved ransomware, which can render computer systems inoperable until the target meets hackers’ financial demands.

Further details of Regis’s cyberattack weren’t made public prior to Tuesday’s summit. But Shari Plantz-Masters, dean of Regis’s College of Computer & Information Sciences, said the university wants to share its story to prevent other digital catastrophes.
Tuesday’s summit at the university features industry professionals — including staffers from the Colorado Department of Transportation, which battled a cyberattack in 2018 — talking about best practices in handling attacks and prevention.

Denver’s Regis University acknowledges it paid a ransom to get its computer system back up and running. It was hit in what’s believed to be an attack from outside the United States last summer.
What Regis learned from this lesson, it is now giving back.

Now some 160 people representing companies, the government and academic institutions took part learning and sharing how to deal with such attacks in a cyber summit on Tuesday.
For its part, the university is combining its business and computer science programs so students on each side can learn about cyber issues.
