This week, DVD kiosk company Redbox quietly launched an ad-supported online video streaming service. It’s still in a limited release, but you can check it out right now in your web browser or through the Redbox Android and iOS mobile apps.

Free Live TV’s layout is similar to other ad-supported live TV services like Xumo. It offers specific channels like Film Rise and The Pet Collective as well as general categories like Comedy, Epic Viral Videos, and Celebrity & Entertainment News.
I took a look at Free Live TV and noticed that the offerings are basic.

Before Free Live TV, Redbox experimented with streaming with On Demand, an on-demand video service launched by the company in late 2017. It allowed users to make a one-time payment to rent or purchase movies and stream them instantly.

But despite its name, Redbox’s new streaming service isn’t offering “live TV” similar to what you’d get on a TV streaming service like YouTube TV or Hulu with Live TV. Instead, the new service offers a curated set of ad-supported movies and TV shows, similar to The Roku Channel, IMDb TV or TiVo Plus, for example.
This free content is organized into channels, including those from brands like TMZ, USA Today, Fail Army, Now This, FilmRise, batteryPOP, Filmhub, Food52 and others.

We understand Redbox is preparing to make a formal announcement about the service’s launch this week. But its arrival was spotted ahead of time by Cord Cutters News and consequently, the news spread.
The service, which began rolling out last week, expands on Redbox’s earlier efforts in streaming, known as Redbox on Demand.

Redbox Free Live TV, meanwhile, is currently available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices, in addition to the web. However, the company says the service is “only available to a select audience” at this time, but will soon be offered nationwide. (Perhaps as soon as this week.)

Further details about Redbox Free Live TV are likely to emerge when Redbox goes public with the service later this week.
Redbox has now shared a statement about the service’s launch, after initially declining to comment:

Redbox is always exploring ways to bring more content and value to consumers. We’ve begun offering free live streaming movies and TV to a subset of consumers via our website and mobile app, with plans to roll it on more devices in the coming days and weeks. Redbox believes that the future of entertainment is dynamic and consists of the right mix of live and video content, and that’s why we’re building this new ecosystem of free content. [...]"

Redbox has beefed up its push into free live-streaming video, part of its ongoing strategy to further diversify the business beyond its trademark brick-red DVD vending machines and digital on-demand sales.

First launched in February, Redbox’s ad-supported Free Live TV service has added Tastemade’s food, travel, and home and design streaming network along with Altice News’ Cheddar news channel. The Redbox over-the-top streaming destination now has 60 live channels.
The lineup includes three themed movie channels: Redbox Rush (action movies), Redbox Comedy and the general-entertainment Redbox Movies.

For its live TV streaming service, Redbox has seen “significant viewership growth” in the news, lifestyle and food categories, according to Chris Yates, GM of Redbox On Demand.

“We’re excited to continue growing our Free Live TV offering with great new content, increasing our distribution and adding new features to help our customers find and watch great content however they want to watch it,” Yates said.

Redbox Free Live TV is available on the web at redbox.com, Roku, iOS and Android devices, Apple TV, Android TV, Vizio Smart TVs, LG TVs and Google’s Chromecast. There’s no login needed to stream the channels.

Redbox is mixing things up. The company announced today they are adding Redbox Free On Demand, an AVOD component that allows customers to watch hundreds of titles at will. Prior to Redbox Free on Demand, the company launched Free Live TV, which, like STIRR, Pluto TV, and Xumo, offers live entertainment in a more linear fashion. With Free On Demand, customers can watch their favorite programming at a time most suitable for them.

“Today’s audiences are fueling an unprecedented demand for premium quality on-demand content that is free with advertising. We expect to see continued growth in AVOD, making Free on Demand a significant addition to our free streaming platform,” said Chris Yates, general manager, Redbox On Demand.
