Dirt-cheap Snapdragon 4-series chips will make nearly every phone a 5G phone

Qualcomm's push for 5G will soon hit some of the cheapest phones on the market. Today, the company announced 5G is coming to the Snapdragon 4-series in "early 2021."

Qualcomm says the goal of these chips is to enable "5G for everyone," and the chips will show up in phones ranging from $125 to $250. The 4 series is where Qualcomm's mass-market sales really happen, and the company says it will be able to reach 3.5 billion smartphone users with these new chips. The only cheaper chips in Qualcomm's lineup are the 2 series, but those phones make up the bargain-basement $100-and-below market and are actually pretty rare.

"5G" here most likely means sub-6GHz 5G, which is cheaper to implement than the faster mmWave 5G.
Sub-6GHz 5G has much better signal characteristics and has a shot of a wide rollout.
5G is still not something anyone should run out and buy a new phone for. The network build-out process is only just beginning, and even sub-6GHz is not available in most locations.

All Qualcomm's 4 series announcement means is that soon you won't have a choice when it comes to 5G—all phones will be 5G phones. 5G handset hardware doesn't mean the networks are ready for 5G or that you'll get a significantly better experience by buying a 5G phone.

Qualcomm is aiming to nudge 5G further down into the mass-market, with the new Snapdragon 480 5G Mobile Platform paving the way for more affordable Android phones that don’t sacrifice support for fifth-generation mobile networks. Latest in the Snapdragon 4-Series, the new chipset has the potential to bring 5G within reach of sub-$200 devices, if manufacturers are of a mind.

Though not the cheapest chipsets in the Snapdragon range, the 4-Series is inside some of the most affordable Android smartphones currently available in the US.
The Nokia 3.4 announced last September, for example, uses the Snapdragon 460 chipset – which this new Snapdragon 480 succeeds – and clocks in at $180 unlocked. What it lacks, though, is 5G.

The Snapdragon 480 5G will correct that, with the Snapdragon X51 5G Modem-RF system. It’ll support not only the more pervasive Sub-6 GHz 5G flavor of 5G networks, which are more ubiquitous but also not the fastest type, but also mmWave.

While Google has moved away from Snapdragon and shifted to its in-house designed Tensor chip for the Pixel 6, Qualcomm is forging on with a new line of mobile chips designed to suit a wide range of budget- and mid-range devices.

Announced today, Qualcomm is releasing three new mobile processors with 5G connectivity in the Snapdragon 778G Plus, Snapdragon 695 5G, and Snapdragon 480 Plus 5G, while the new Snapdragon 680 4G chip is meant to support any devices still intended for use on LTE networks.

As always, while OEMs aren’t quite ready yet to name specific models or devices, a number of big names have already signed on to feature one of Qualcomm’s new chips in an upcoming device including Nokia, Motorola, Oppo, Vivi, Xiaomi, and more.

And while there aren’t any firm timetables, Qualcomm says devices featuring its new 4G and 5G Snapdragon chips should begin showing up on retail shelves as soon as Q4 2021.
