Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) has now officially announced the first Pwn2Own for 2020, to take part in Vancouver at CanSecWest, March 18-20. This time the stakes have been upped in the automotive category: the hacker who can evade the multiple layers of security found in a Tesla Model 3 to pull off a complete vehicle compromise will win a $500,000 (£380,000) prize.

As well as the Tesla Model 3 challenge, the elite hackers will be attempting to demonstrate zero-day exploits that impact Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Oracle VirtualBox, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Windows 10.

Zero Day Initiative – Pwn2Own Returns to Vancouver for 2020

As usual, we will hold Pwn2Own at the CanSecWest conference, which occurs on March 18-20 of this year.

This year, Tesla returns to the contest. Driving off with a brand-new Model 3 will be a harder challenge this year, which means the potential rewards will be much higher as well. Microsoft also returns as partner and VMware returns as a sponsor with their somewhat more traditional Pwn2Own targets. All told, more than $1,000,000 USD in cash and prizes are available to contestants, including the new Tesla car.

As have many around the world, we at the Zero Day Initiative have been closely monitoring the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
While it had been our intent to take all measures to physically be in Vancouver for CanSecWest and Pwn2Own, we have made the difficult decision to hold the contest completely virtually.

We had previously announced contestants would be allowed to compete remotely in this year’s competition. That remains true. However, instead of ZDI researchers running the attempts in Vancouver, they will do all attempts from our office in Austin, Texas. We will be in communication with the researchers either by phone or video chat during the attempts.

What won’t change is the scheduling. We’ll be running these attempts during the CanSecWest conference and passing results to the conference organizers for them to share with attendees. We’ll be videoing and live blogging all attempts and tweeting results as they come in, too. It’s our goal to ensure as many as possible see the results of the tremendous research done by the Pwn2Own contestants.

Phi Phạm Hồng of STAR Labs received $40,000 for successfully demonstrating a VirtualBox exploit that resulted in a guest OS escape and arbitrary code execution on the host.
Amat Cama and Richard Zhu of team Fluoroacetate earned $50,000 for demonstrating that they could hijack a system by exploiting use-after-free vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader and the Windows kernel.

The Synacktiv team attempted to hack VMware Workstation, but their attempt failed.
