In South Korea, game retailer Gamewoori has a banner that reads, “Pre-Order Now” next to images of the PS5. The PS5 launched there on November 12, but like everywhere supplies are tight and hopeful customers still have to reserve consoles from future shipments.

Some individuals, however, are trying to flip their PS5 pre-orders by selling them at marked-up prices online.
In response, as tipster Sang points out, Gamewoori has announced on Instagram that if they identify any of their pre-orders up for sale at higher prices online, they will simply cancel the order. Moreover, even if the pre-order has been paid for, Gamewoori says it will still cancel any scalper’s order.

iFixit has released its teardown of the PlayStation 5 and its DualSense controller — and it goes into even more detail than the one Sony did earlier this year. The gadget repair company discovered that the console has a ton of screws holding it together, and that there’s a weird catch to replacing the optical drive.

It turns out that the optical drive is software-locked to the motherboard. The physical swap is apparently a piece of cake, but any replacement you put in won’t read disks, so if your optical drive fails you’ll be sending it to Sony.

Sony shipped 3.4 million PlayStation 5 units in the first four weeks of availability, the highest ever for a PlayStation console, according to a new report.

According to a new report from Digitimes, spotted by Serkan Toto, Sony will also ship between 16.8 and 18 million units in 2021 thanks to a supply steam ramp-up. More units will be reserved for Asian territory from January.
While Digitimes is not always accurate, the 3.4 million figure does fall in line with reports from earlier this year revealing that Sony is planning to ship 10 million PlayStation 5 units before March 2021. The Japanese company originally planned to ship between 5 and 6 million units by March, but the increased demand made Sony change its plans.

As seen in the announcement made on Twitter by PlayStation India, the PS5 will be available to purchase in the Indian region on February 2, 2021. As for the price of the video game system in India, this was announced back in October.

Sony said in its earnings report today that it sold 4.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the holiday quarter ended December 31.

In the third-fiscal quarter, the company also said it sold 1.4 million older PlayStation 4 consoles. Total revenue for the quarter for the Game and Network Services division was 883.2 billion yen, or $8.4 billion, compared with $6.01 billion a year ago for the same period.
Game software revenue was $4.6 billion, while game hardware revenue was $2.28 billion. Network services and other revenue made up the remainder of the division’s sales. Operating income was $763 million in the quarter.

The prices are significantly higher than the U.S. ones, where the former is priced at $499 and the latter at $399.

Sony has now sold more than 10 million PS5 consoles. That’s up more than 2 million sales from the 7.8 million Sony previously revealed in April, and it means the PS5 continues to outpace sales of the PS4, making it the fastest-selling console in Sony’s history.

The PS5 may be selling well, but supply is constrained and it’s still difficult to purchase a console right now thanks to a global chip shortage.

“While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply,” says Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The first software beta for the PlayStation 5 has arrived, with a few useful tricks: you can expand the internal SSD storage, and use the PS5's 3D audio effects on external speakers. Sony invited PS5 owners to register for the beta in June, but the update's arrived now.

The PS5 beta previews features that will come in final form to the PS5 later this year. If you're concerned about putting a beta on your $500 game console, hold off till then (we haven't tested it yet). It does have some notable upgrades: mainly, the chance to update your PS5 storage.
The ability to replace the internal fast SSD means that people could, finally, add more storage for your PS5 game downloads.

But, Sony has very specific guidance for what M.2 SSD drives are required, and how they need to be installed. According to Sony, the beta can be rolled back to the normal PS5 OS, but if that's done, the user-replaced SSD won't work. So be careful and keep that in mind.
Also of note: the immersive 3D audio that works via headphones on the PS5 also works with TV speakers using the beta software.

To add more context to Sony's announcement, we looked at how quickly some other recent consoles took to sell their first 10 million systems worldwide. While different launch dates and staggered international launches skew some of these comparisons, the data overall shows that the PS5 is selling as fast or faster than some of the most popular consoles of the recent past.

Typically, when a new games console launches its price point is below the actual cost of manufacturing. But over time, through a combination of bulk component orders and the refining of the hardware design, the cost falls below the retail price. The PS3 was sold at a loss for nearly four years, the PS4 was profitable within six months of its launch, and the PS5 has taken eight months. As Bloomberg reports, Sony made the announcement alongside raising its fiscal-year profit forecast. However, there's still some work to do to make the cheaper, $399 Digital Edition of the PS5 profitable.

In other good news, Totoki confirmed that Sony has managed to order enough chips to hit its console sales target for March 31, 2022. As VGC reports, Sony already set a goal of selling 14.8 million PS5 consoles during this fiscal year, which would take the installed user base to over 22 million.

The update also brings 3D audio to built-in TV speakers. Previously, getting the PS5's spatial audio required a Pulse 3D or other compatible headset. Users who are more inclined to play games without headphones can now enjoy 3D audio from their TV. It also has an optimization to get the best experience.

"Players can measure the acoustics of their room using the microphone on their DualSense wireless controller to apply the 3D audio setting that's optimized for their room," said the release notes.

Sony is threatening legal action against Dbrand, which was until recently selling a peripheral called Darkplates for the PlayStation 5. The console manufacturer has sent a cease and desist letter asking that the console peripheral manufacturer stop making the part.

Dbrand began selling Darkplates earlier this year. Gamers who weren’t satisfied with the PS5’s stark white faceplates for aesthetic reasons could replace them with black Darkplates. In an announcement post from Reddit last year, the company responded to a query about Sony taking the Darkplates down with, “We encourage them to try.” They also said, “Sue us, Sony” in the post itself.

Sony's latest financial reports have announced that 13.4m PlayStation 5 consoles have been sold to date, with 3.3 million PS5s being sold within the July-September Q2 period.

As revealed in Sony's Financial Results for Q2, the company's Game & Network Services Segment sold 1 million more PS5s to retailers in the quarter when compared to previous three-month period. This is the second highest quarterly sales for the PS5, matching Q4 2020 and only just trailing behind Q3 2020's record 4.5m sales.
While sales are impressive, there has been a decrease in operating profit, which is down 21% year-on-year. This comes partly due to lower PS4 sales - the console sold just 0.2m units this quarter - and PS5 consoles being sold at a loss.

Sony has reportedly slashed its previous production forecast by around one million consoles. As with so many other industries, the problem is being blamed on worsening component shortages and logistics issues.

The depressing news comes from a Bloomberg report that cites people familiar with Sony's operations. It notes that the Japanese gaming giant had previously aimed to produce more than 16 million assembled PS5 units by the end of its fiscal year in March, but that number has now been cut to 15 million. The reduction will make Sony's target of hitting 14.8 million PS5 sales by March difficult, the people said.

PlayStation 5 offers a beta program where new software updates and changes are tested out before being generally available. This program is only available to select participants invited in a limited number of countries. Today, Sony has rolled out a significant PS5 update that introduces support for 1440p display output and lots more.

Gamers can choose the 1440p HDMI output on compatible displays. This will allow games that offer 1440p output to take advantage of native resolutions.
Next, we have Gamelists which essentially lets you organize games into folders. You can create up to 15 Gamelists, with each list containing 100 up to 100 titles. The same game can be added across multiple Gamelists regardless of whether it is a digital, physical, or streaming title. They will be accessible through the "Your Collection" tab.

Prices are jumping by 10 percent in Europe, 21 percent in Japan, and by around 6 percent in the UK as inflation rates impact Sony and many other companies. While Sony is increasing PS5 prices in many parts of the world, it says there won’t be a price increase in the US.

“We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries,” explains Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. “Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada.”

Sony has once again quietly launched a revised PS5 model that’s more lightweight. Press Start, an Australian-based gaming site, reports that both the disc and digital versions of the PS5 are a lot lighter now, after new models began appearing in Australia this week.

The new disc model (CFI-1202A) now weighs 3.9kg (8.6 pounds), a 7 percent reduction from the 2021 revision (4.2kg / 9.2 pounds) and an even bigger 13 percent reduction from the original model (4.5kg / 9.9 pounds). The digital PS5 has a similar weight loss, with the 2022 revision now weighing 3.4kg (7.5 pounds), down 13 percent from the original weight of 3.9kg (8.6 pounds). The new models mean the disc version of the PS5 now weighs the same as the original digital PS5 model.
