The upcoming PS5 release date was leaked a few days ago via secret internal e-mail. According to the e-mail, the next PlayStation 5 is going to launch in February 2020 during a major Sony event. The PS5 is also expected to have beefed-up specs, an Ultra-HD Blu-ray optical drive and much more.

The PlayStation 5 will replace the PS4 and its slightly more powerful version of the PS4 Pro as well. Several industry experts have already weighed in on how powerful the upcoming PlayStation 5 is.

Recently, video game developer Toshihiro Nagoshi praised the performance of the upcoming PS5. According to him, “The processing power of PlayStation 5 is incredible.” Further elaborating on the power of Sony’s upcoming console, the game developer said, “If you would pour its power into graphics, it’ll be the best that we’ve yet to see.”

The next generation PlayStation console will be able to consume far less power in standby mode than the PS4. The power-saving feature appears to be an optional setting however, not the default. The news comes via a blog post titled PlayStation Joins Forces with the United Nations to Combat Climate Change.

”I am also very pleased to announce the next generation PlayStation console will include the possibility to suspend gameplay with much lower power consumption than PS4 (which we estimate can be achieved at around 0.5 W),” writes Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Both the PlayStation and Xbox consoles have been criticized for their high-levels of power consumption while idling. A 2014 report from the Natural Resources Defense Council showed the PS4 drawing as much as 8.5 watts in standby. That’s compared to about 137 watts when playing games or 89 watts when streaming video, the study concluded.

Rumor mill: While its launch is almost certainly at least a year away, Sony has revealed plenty of details about the PlayStation 5, but there’s one thing it hasn’t mentioned: a PS5 Pro model. According to a new rumor, not only will there be a more powerful Pro version of the next-gen machine, but it will also be released alongside the standard PS5.

According to Japanese games journalist Zenji Nishikawa, Sony will be releasing a PlayStation 5 Pro alongside the base version of its next console. He claims on his YouTube channel that the machine will cost between $100 to $150 more than the standard PS5.
Why would Sony release both consoles together rather than wait a few years before launching the Pro? Nishikawa says it’s because the company has “acknowledged the interest in a high-end model and wants to give players what they want right from the beginning of the generation."

The biggest question, of course, is just how much more powerful could Sony make a PS5 Pro compared to the base console?

What the hell, Halo 5 takes up 98GB of diskspace, this is ridiculous. I wonder how long it will take to load. I think this trend of bigger games is a bad one. Just look at the Nintendo Switch Lite, I'm not exactly sure how big games are, but they load very quickly from the SD card and graphics are great.

It should load quickly, despite the size. I don't have an issue with the large size of games, as it allows for better graphics and it's not as if storage space is limited these days.

I recently got a PS4. Forza Hozion 4 was a 63GB download and takes up 75GB of disk space. Doom (the new 2016 version), which I have on disc needed to download a 62GB update, before I could play it. My PS4 has a 1TB hard drive, so the large storage usage of the games doesn't bother me.

OK cool, if loading of games remains fast I guess it's not a problem. Except for the fact that it will probably take a while to install and download games. I've looked it up, on the Nintendo Switch, a game like FIFA 18 is only 14GB big. And you can play it on TV and on the portable device. Plus games don't need to be installed. Weird that PS5 and Xbox don't offer this.

The Switch only has 720p resolution and comes with just 32GB of storage space. While you can expand the storage space on the Switch with a Micro SD card, my Xbox One came with a 1TB hard drive.

Sony's next console iteration, potentially developed under the codename Erebus, was rumored to be powered by an eight-core Ryzen processor from AMD - which was later confirmed -, bringing it in line with the Xbox Scarlett, which uses an undisclosed Zen 2-based Ryzen chip and Navi custom graphics.
Jim Ryan, CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, had this to say:

What just happened? Sony earlier this week revealed several details about the PlayStation 5, including its “holidays 2020” release window, but one thing it never unveiled was the price. Yet one Dutch retailer has put the console up for pre-order.

Netherlands-based 76 Game Mania is allowing the country’s residents to reserve a PlayStation 5 for €50 ($55). When the next-gen machine is launched, that money will be taken off its price.
As reported by Lets Go Digital, reserving the PS5 ensures buyers are placed on a waiting list to get one of the consoles from the first batch of inventory that 76 Game Mania receives.
It’s suspected that the PlayStation 5 will be around $500 when it arrives in time for the holidays next year.

We now know that the PS5 will feature a redesigned controller that replaces the rumble technology with haptic feedback. It also has a solid-state drive and optical drive that doubles as a 4K Bluray player, as well as hardware-level ray tracing support. Games, meanwhile, will come on 100GB discs, and their installations can be configured, meaning users can install only a single-player campaign, if they wish. Additionally, there’s its 120Hz/4K support and backward compatibility.

I have just read that games will load very fast on the PS5, thanks to a super fast SSD, so that sounds good to me. But I didn't realize that the Switch worked differently, it's old skool. I remember back in the days, you also didn't have to install games on the Sega Mega Drive, but PlayStation and Xbox work more like PC's.

The backward compatibility feature of the PlayStation 5 will reportedly work with all generations back to the original PlayStation, which will give the console a massive boost amid competition with the Xbox Series X.

A new report from HipHopGamer claims that Sony is developing a so-called “remastering engine” for the PlayStation 5 that will allow the console to run PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 games with various improvements.
The feature, according to HipHopGamer, will reportedly work in a similar manner to the Xbox One X’s backward compatibility, which means that older games will receive upgrades such as 4K support.

According to ComicBook, HipHopGamer has previously proven to be a reliable source. However, the powerful backward compatibility feature of the PlayStation 5 will remain nothing more than a rumor until Sony officially confirms it.
Backward compatibility is viewed as one of the major selling points of the Xbox system, but if Sony also starts offering the feature, one of Microsoft’s advantages will be eliminated.

In an interview with Business Insider Japan (translated via Gematsu), Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Jim Ryan revealed that despite PlayStation architect Mark Cerny's teases or the amount of information available to all via the internet, the company hasn't still revealed things that make the upcoming PS5 different from other gaming consoles, especially older models.

“ But you know,” Ryan said, “There are still more unique elements for PlayStation 5 to come that separate it from previous consoles. The ‘bigger differences’ have yet to be announced.”
The SIE CEO said that for the PS5, the company is adding a solid-state drive, significantly reducing (or doing away with) load times, adding 3D audio and adding haptic feedback support to the DualShock controllers. Once users try these elements and experience how they impact video gaming, he said, they will be surprised and realize that it's a “completely different experience.”

Expensive components and gamer expectations are causing Sony a headache when it comes to pricing the PlayStation 5, with the console’s high-end parts threatening to put it out of reach of many would-be owners. Sony is expected to release the PS5 this coming holiday season, but rumors from inside the company suggest growing anxieties about just how high a price tag the console can bear.

Concerns within Sony are that the bill of materials for the new console could hit around $450 per unit, Bloomberg reports. That’s being blamed on a combination of high-end specs and the parts Sony has earmarked being in relatively short supply.
The biggest problem, it’s reported, is getting enough memory.

Both RAM and NAND are in high demand, however, with Sony’s buyers going up against smartphone-makers along with PC companies and others. Manufacturers of the very fastest examples of both memory are in short supply.
Instead, Sony is said to be holding off on fixing its retail price until it sees what Microsoft is doing.

Tuesday, the company announced an upcoming “deep dive” on the next-gen console where system architect Mark Cerny will talk about the “PS5’s system architecture, and how it will shape the future of games.” The event will be broadcast on the official PlayStation blog and on YouTube at 9AM PT / 12PM ET Wednesday.

The special event follows Sony’s confirmation of the PlayStation 5 name back in October, and details about the power of the console earlier in 2019. It's been almost a year since Sony started talking about the PlayStation 5 in an uncharacteristically revealing Wired interview. We learned the next-generation console will be powered by AMD's third-generation Ryzen CPU and a custom Radeon Navi GPU. Additionally, it'll support hardware-accelerated ray-tracing and feature speedy SSD storage.

Sony's lead PlayStation architect, Mark Cerny, finally gave us an in-depth look at the PS5 in a livestream event, in lieu of a major GDC keynote. And if you don't feel like sitting through that, Eurogamer has a full breakdown of his presentation. The key takeaway? It'll certainly be a huge hardware leap over the PS4 and PS4 Pro -- but it remains to be seen how Sony's hardware can compete with Microsoft's upcoming console.

Let's talk specs: Cerny confirms that the PlayStation 5's graphics processor will feature 36 compute units and up to 10.28 teraflops worth of compute performance. That's a bit less than the Xbox Series X's 12-teraflop GPU, but realistically you might not see many differences in performance.
That SSD will push 5.5 gigabytes per second compared to a mere 50 to 100 MB/s, meaning it can fill the system's 16GB of GDDR6 RAM in two seconds.

It's interesting to see how Sony and Microsoft devices take advantage of AMD's hardware. The PS5's eight-core Zen 2 CPU will run up to 3.5GHz with variable frequencies, so it can slow down when necessary.
Sony definitely has the lead with its custom SSD with 5GB/s of raw bandwidth and 8 to 9GB/s of compressed throughput.

Editor's take: Sony has some hurdles to overcome if it wishes to maintain its crown in the console wars. One of the big ones: backwards compatibility on the PS5. The company abandoned legacy support with the mid-season refresh of the PS3. With the PS4, it was more of an afterthought as Sony decided to slap users in the face with a subscription service to play older games that they probably already owned. Ouch!

With the PlayStation 5, the console maker has been promising cross-generational compatibility, but until now has been vague about how it will work and how far back it will go. In a deep-dive keynote today, the PS5's architectural design head Mark Cerny said that so far, the system will be compatible with most of the "top 100" PS4 games.

"We recently took a look at the top 100 PlayStation 4 titles as ranked by play time, and we're expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PlayStation 5," Cerny said (video below).
While this is a far cry from full backward compatibility, at least it's better than what the PS4 had at launch.

"[Putting PS4 chipsets in is] extremely expensive," he said. So instead, the new CPU will operate in three modes — native PS5, legacy PS4 Pro, and legacy PS4. These modes are built into the AMD hardware, so while the technology may evolve, backward compatibility will not be removed for a mid-life-cycle price cut as it happened with the PlayStation 3.

On the downside, Cerny said that because of the boosted frequencies, each PS4 and Pro title has to be tested individually for compatibility. Some older games may not be able to handle the new hardware, but so far, initial tests have been promising.

"The boost is truly massive this time around, and some game code just can't handle it," Cerny explained. "Testing has to be done on a title-by-title basis. Results are excellent, though."

The page now says ‘PS5 is coming’ and reiterates the console’s Holiday 2020 release date. It also includes brief information on the device’s super-fast SSD hard drive and 3D audio.

“With these capabilities, PS5 will allow developers to maximise their creativity, building expansive worlds and new play experiences in the games they design,” the website summarises. As before, there’s a form for fans to fill out in order to receive regular email updates on the next-gen console, with the platform holder pledging dibs on “the PS5 release date, PS5 price, and upcoming roster of PS5 launch games”.

In a nutshell: Are you hoping to buy a PlayStation 5 at launch? It might be a struggle. According to a new report, Sony will limit the next-gen machine’s initial production run, meaning there will be fewer units available at release than there were PlayStation 4 consoles back in 2013.

According to Bloomberg’s report, which cites anonymous people “familiar with the matter,” the limited production run isn’t a result of Covid-19 disruption, as one might expect. The actual reason is said to be its price.
The problem, it seems, is the price. Sony has revealed many of the PS5’s specs [...] High demand for DRAM and NAND flash memory is also causing issues for the company.

There will reportedly be 5 to 6 million units released before March 2021, whereas the PS4 sold 7.5 million in its first two quarters, and that was with a delayed release in Japan.
Mass production of the PS5 is set to begin in June, which could be when the console, and perhaps its price, is officially unveiled.

It’s almost time. Sony will showcase PS5 games for the first time in a live stream on June 4th at 4 PM ET. It follows a recent report that Sony was set to pull back the curtain on some next-generation titles next week.

The stream, which will run on Twitch and YouTube, will last just over an hour. “Studios, both larger and smaller, those newer and those more established, all have been hard at work developing games that will showcase the potential of the hardware,” Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan wrote in a blog post.
While some publishers have offered peeks at next-generation gameplay, including titles that’ll hit PS5, Sony hasn’t shown off any exclusive titles yet. It looks like that’s about to change.

Sony has told PlayStation 4 game developers that any new titles submitted for certification must also be compatible with PlayStation 5, beginning 13th July.
This means all PS4 games received by Sony for testing after the middle of that month are technically forwards compatible - playable on Sony's next-gen console - though it is up to each game's developer to ensure this is the case.

Developer documentation - released on PlayStation's internal Partner website and seen by Eurogamer - details an option developers must check to state their game has been tested for compatibility with PS5 hardware. This option was added at the end of April in a new version of Sony's PS4 software developer kit.
A game will be deemed compatible with PlayStation 5 only if its submission code runs without issues on Sony's next-gen machine, and provides the same features on PS5 as it does on PS4.

If a game was originally submitted to Sony before 13th July 2020, any new patch or remaster after that date would not require PS5 compatibility, but it would be "strongly recommended".

But it's worth noting that while approved software has the technical capability to work across generations, Sony is yet to go into detail on how it will handle this in reality.

According to Digitimes, via VGC, sources within the hardware’s semiconductor supply chain have revealed that the custom PS5 SoC will enter testing next week.

While the PS5 SoC will start to be delivered to downstream manufacturers after the testing period, Digitimes writes that they expect full production to take place in August.
The PlayStation 5 system-on-chip is a custom designed AMD Zen 2 CPU that can periodically boost up to a speed of 3.5ghz.
