I've been playing on AWS, taking advantage of their "the first year is free" offer. I am impressed! Their micro Linux instances seem faster than comparable VMs on my hardware (which may not be surprising).

By the way, this is effectively free VPS. So far, I've found no limitations. I've installed packages, compiled stuff, and established VPN tunnels.

But I don't really trust Amazon, for all of the usual reasons. They probably don't trust me, either.

Are there inexpensive privacy-friendly VPS providers? Conversely, are there any that I should avoid, for whatever reasons?

    Thanks :)

Not an expert on this but personally I would go for a provider in Sweden. Here are some. I would would just look at their TOS and email them about their privacy policies.
