You know what I still don't get? Are these portable tools modified in any way? In other words, are they truly secure? Or is it the exact same Mozilla Firefox, for example.
to answer precisely: - the starter is based on personal experience, those are sophisticated, but not perfect. - altering Mozilla files will end in punishment, so Firefox/Thunderbird is original - the portable code for mozilla products have issues and cause issues (sandboxie) i dont uses it - blown and not working in many ways. but p-apps is at least a trustable platform for a lot of software. the negative part: portables are much overrated and out of sight of any security. example: mozilla products. the starter has to contain special code only for mozilla products to remove remnants. this, and more. the "platform" is only an indexing program for all those programs in its sub folders, it dont has to be a sample from p-apps. its a nice to have, but not mandatory.
Absolutely exactly the same, only the user data (profile folder) folder is in a different place, and that's why there is a separate small .exe file to run, which contains additional commands to move the data folder or create it in another place immediately. The same is done with registry data and settings. And usually two types of installers are made, they are either so-called full or offline installers or online installers that download a standard installation package from the Internet, unpacks them and then place it where needed.
OK thanks for the info. Of course in the end it still comes down to trust, because they could still trojanize apps. The reason why I was interested because it would allow me to run the same version of apps side by side. With Sandboxie I ran into troubles with certain apps. I didn't understand this, what do you mean with special code?
its special, thats it. as you dont understand its code it has to be enough for you. anyhow: each portable is questionable and undermines global and local security.
BTW, I was thinking. I suppose that they use a tool like Cameyo to make portable apps. But I believe this product has been discontinued. https://filehippo.com/download_cameyo/
FYI. PortableApps has their own tools to create their format: https://portableapps.com/development/portableapps.com_format https://portableapps.com/apps/development/portableapps.com_launcher https://portableapps.com/apps/development/portableapps.com_installer
OK I see, so they made there own tool to portablize apps. I suppose it works a bit the same like Cameyo, but I read that Cameyo is very slow.
