KDE has more eye-candy stuff that Cinnamon or XFCE.

my favorite is KDE but my machine is not quite young enough for that.

XFCE looks pretty damn nice too and runs quite fast on my machine.

i don't really care for Cinnamon, or Unity or Metro for that matter. ;)

They're all different. I'd suggest you download and burn a few live cd ISO's and take a look at each one, to see which you prefer. Use Mint 13 if you want long term support (LTS) (3 years), or Mint 14 (18 months support). 14 would have the "latest and greatest" of everything as well, and 13 might be a bit more stable etc.

I'd also recommend Ubuntu, which is very well done, and just needs a small bit of work to get everything you need working. I'm having great luck with it right now myself, and even streaming video on full screen 24" monitor looks amazing, something that I had trouble with on almost every other distro, except Ubuntu and OpenSUSE.

For low spec laptops / netbooks / etc used mainly for web access try the open source Chromium OS ; [now at version 2.4.1290, ringing in at 826MB as an ISO]

    http://getchrome.eu/

Cr OS Linux (pronounced like Cros Linux) is the free OS built around the revolutionary Chromium browser - a foundation for Google Chrome. We call it the chrome plated OS, because it is stable and shiny. This open source project provides a lightweight Linux distribution similar to Google Chrome OS for the best web browsing experience on any x86 PC, netbook or notebook.

    Also, see here.. http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os
Chromium OS is an open-source project that aims to build an operating system that provides a fast, simple, and more secure computing experience for people who spend most of their time on the web

System requirements of Cr OS Linux:
CPU: Intel Pentium, Atom, Xeon or newer; AMD Duron, Athlon, Sempron, Opteron or newer
    RAM: min. 512 MB
    Hard disk: min. 3 GB
Graphics card: most of graphics cards with 3D hardware acceleration

Trooper : Not yet done so myself....

But may I suggest some links below....

    http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-guide
...particularly half way down the page, the section:
Building an image to run in a virtual machine

This is way over my head at this stage.

However there are lots of Videos on YouTube, some of which may be of real help ......

How To Set Up Chromium OS In A Virtual Machine
" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjq...inks may be a bit old... -cheers, feandur
