i ran spybot (whick found nothing) and ad-aware which couldn't fix this file

a system 32 error message also shows up upon start up. i dont turn my computer off often - but when i start up i also get icons on my desk top (second thought - travel voucher - and pc search) - then folders are added to my internet favorites.

    here is my hjt log.

    Hi kellie,

This line indicates that Ad-Aware still had to clean up some files upon your next reboot.
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Ad-aware] "C:\PROGRA~1\Lavasoft\AD-AWA~1\Ad-aware.exe" "+b1"

If you have rebooted since you posted the above log, then some of these files I am listing below to be fixed may have already been removed.

First, Make sure you have all files and folders viewable:
How to Show Hidden Files and Folders.

I am not finding much information on these files:
    ts.exe
    tsm.exe

Unless you know what they are used for, then could please go to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\tsa\ folder and find those two files, right-click on them (do not left-click them) choose "Properties" and tell me what it says there under the various tabs (what program they belong to, etc). If you do not recognize them, then go to Kaspersky and upload them for a scan. Please let me know what the scan says about them.

Next, create a permanent folder on your C: drive (example: C:\HJT\ ) and unzip Hijackthis.exe into the permanent folder. HijackThis must run from it's own folder and not the Desktop or Temp folders. It creates backups in the folder it is ran from, so if you should delete something you needed, you will be able to restore it from the backups.

    ****

Rescan with Hijackthis and place a check beside the following items.
Make sure you have closed ALL browsers and open windows (except HijackThis), and click *Fix checked:

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key just before windows begins to load.

Find and delete the following listed in bold:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\bridge.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\rjxx.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\kbdlt.exe
    c:\installer <--entire folder
    C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates <--entire folder

    While still in safe mode:

Go to the C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Local Settings\Temp\ and select everything in that folder and delete it (don't delete the Temp folder itself though).

Then navigate to the C:\windows\temp\ and delete everything in there too except the following folders, Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and History folders (leave those).

And clear your IE cache: open IE --> Tools --> Internet Options --> click on "Delete Files" and put a check in the box for "Off line contents", click OK, then click the "History" button, then click "yes" to clear it, then "OK" to close the Internet Options Panel.

Next, do another scan with Ad-Aware in safe mode (please make sure are using the most recent build 6.181, and have checked for updates (at the moment it is Reference Number : 01R325 27.06.2004).

Reboot your computer normally, and post a new log here (in this thread), along with the results of the Kaspersky scan for those two files.

    Regards,

    snap

hi snap - thanks for your help. i did run into a few snags.
first of all - i dont know what the ts.exe or tsm.exe are, but after i re-ran hijack this and deleted the files when i was rebooting - end task came up with those application names on them. i did run it on kaspersky and it came back no viruses.

then when i was in safe mode - i couldnt find the following
    c:\windows\system32.dll
    c:\windows\system32.kbdlt.exe (but did see kdblt.dll)
    c:\program Files\web_rebates

when i rebooted i wasnt able to get online - and my system was kinda messed up. i had to restore it to yesterday. i ran ad-aware (the latest) the did a new hijackthis and here are the results.
thanks for your help. i really need it.

    Hi kellie,

AdAware may have taken care of them the first time, but they are back now since you restored.
The system32.kbdlt.exe file, I think where you've got a period there after system32 might be a typing mistake. It should just be kbdlt.exe in the System32 folder.

For the tsm.exe and ts.exe, could you please go to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\tsa\ folder and find those two files, right-click on them (do not left-click them) choose "Properties" and tell me what it says there under the various tabs. Also, what other files are in that folder...is the folder large in size?

If it's not too big, please zip up a copy of the tsa folder with it's contents, and email the zipped copy to pieterATwilderssecurity.org (replace the AT with an @) for analysis. In the body of the email message, please include a link to this thread and a brief message, so Pieter will be able to find it easily.

Then boot your compter into safe mode, make sure you still have all files and folders viewable,
Find and delete the following listed in bold:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\bridge.dll <--it may be gone but doublecheck
    c:\installer <--the folder
    C:\WINDOWS\rjxx.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\mwsvm.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\kbdlt.exe

Can you do a search for the system32.dll and look for a system32.exe file also, and let me know if you find them.

Then run another scan with Adaware while in safe mode, reboot after the scan, and re-post a new log here to be checked.

    Regards,
