    Hi dmarcelo,

Download and install APM from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm

Before you start, please unzip hijackthis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder in the folder it's in.
These will now end up on your desktop, which may not be desired.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Marcelo\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Marcelo\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Marcelo\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Marcelo\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Marcelo\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

    Then start APM.
In the upper window select explorer.exe
In the lower window find and rightclick the BHO from the HijackThis log
    ( C:\WINDOWS\System32\igka.dll )
Select Unload DLL and click OK on the prompts that follow.

Reboot and scan with AdAware to remove the txt and html protocol association.

Copy the contents of the bold text to Notepad.
    Name the file Appinit.bat
    Save as type *All Files*
    Save on the Desktop.

    Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv
    ren windows1.hiv windows.txt

    Double click on Appinit.bat
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt
Post the content or attach the file please.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hi dmarcelo,

Use the Recovery Console to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\sqlgi.dll

Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console

If this fails for some reason I willl need to know if you are using XP Home or Pro and whether your filesystem is NTFS or FAT32.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Pieter,

Using recovery console seems way too intricate for my level of experience. Is there another way to delete this DLL ?

    Thanks
    Marcelo
Also while trying to fix this About blank keeps on coming back and changing or addint to my HJT log since we last fixed it. Is that ok?
What should I do for now?

    thanks

    Doubleclick "My Computer"
Rightclick the active partition ( C: in your case)
Choose Properties and look on the General Tab.

No problem. We all had to start at one time. And you're working on it. ;)

    Download CWShredder:
    http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe
But do not run it yet.

Then download and save to desktop... this bat file: hiving.bat

Sign off the internet and stay off until all of these steps have been completed.

Double click on the batch to run it. Then Reboot.
(If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning. Please allow this to run. The script is just producing a message box.)
After a reboot the super hidden nasty file will no longer be loaded and will be visible.

After the reboot Navigate to and right click this file and select properties:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\sqlgi.dll

use the security tab on the file and take ownership.
How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

    Change the 'everyone special' to
you> with Admin rights-> FULL control
Then try to delete it, if that fails try to rename
    it first to different name+ext.
Then if that fails try to rename it again to different name+ext.

    Ex:
    res.dll > baddie.txt
    baddie.txt > badfile.111
    Few times... Etc.

    Once you have deleted C:\WINDOWS\System32\sqlgi.dll
Use the Disk Cleanup Utility to empty all your Temp folders and empty the recycle bin.
    Reboot.

    Run CWShredder immediately.
Press the fix button to clean.
    Reboot.

Then run Ad-Aware too as described here:
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=15913

    Regards,

    Pieter

2 quick questions for you before I do this:
1: I have cable modem so I should disconnect it right?
2: On CWShredder which files do I fix?

    Thanks
    Marcelo

    1. Yes. Break the connection, if need be physically by unplugging it.
    2. CWShredder has a Fix button. It will do the rest by itself. Should it prompt you always play safe and leave alone what you don't know.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Dear Pieter;
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your help on this board. It looks like not only you know what you are doing but you are very patient as well. As far as my problem is concerned it seems that this virus is finally gone unless you need for me to do something else?
While I have you here and not to abuse of your time, when I type a search at the address bar it gives me a message of connnection not available etc . and the adress bar will some strange letters. For ex if I type cat I would get http:/&%scat.
    Any thoughts,
    Thanks
    Marcelo
