PHP 8 will be released on November 26, 2020. It's a new major version, which means that it will introduce some breaking changes, as well as lots of new features and performance improvements. PHP 8 is in very active development right now, with its first alpha expected on June 18, 2020.

Because of the breaking changes, there's a higher chance you'll need to make some changes in your code to get it running on PHP 8.
Besides breaking changes, PHP 8 also brings a nice set of new features such as the JIT compiler, union types, attributes, and more.

It's no secret among web developers and programmers in general: PHP doesn't have the best reputation. Despite still being one of the most used languages to build web applications; over the years PHP has managed to get itself a reputation of messy codebases, inexperienced developers, insecure code, an inconsistent core library, and what not.

History summarized
Before diving into details, let's review how PHP, the language, is developed these days. We're at version 7.4 now, and PHP 8.0 will be the next version after that, at the end of 2020.

Ever since the late 5.* era, the core team tries to keep a consistent yearly release cycle, and have succeeded in doing so for the past four years.
In general, every new release is actively supported for two years, and gets another year of "security fixes only".

Microsoft will not support PHP 8.0 for Windows in 'any capacity'

Microsoft has announced that it will not offer support in 'any capacity' for PHP for Windows 8.0 when it is released.

Microsoft has been providing support for the development and building of the PHP programming language on Windows. This support includes developing security patches for PHP and creating native Windows builds.
With PHP 8.0 scheduled for release in November 2020, Microsoft PHP Windows Lead Dale Hirt stated on the PHP Internals mailing list that they will not be supporting PHP 8.0 for Windows.

To add some clarity to Hirt's post, PHP Release Manager Sara Golemon posted to Reddit explaining that this does not mean PHP 8.0 will not be supported in Windows. It just means that Microsoft will not be the one building and supporting it.

PHP 8.0 Officially Released With Many Language Additions, Better Performance

PHP 8.0 is out today as expected as a major update to this widely-used programming language for server-side programming and other purposes.

PHP 8.0 introduces an optional JIT compiler, integrates the existing JSON support to core (no longer optional), and adds language support for attributes, union types, a static return type, and other additions.
